Can't Find Dress to Try On

Cheryl, on June 21, 2019 at 3:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
Hi ladies! I'm still pretty far out from my wedding, so it's too early to purchase a dress, but I fell in love with the Della Marie from Maggie Sottero. The problem is that the dress came out last fall and on their website the only store that currently has it to try on is in Utah. I'm in North Carolina. I really think it could be THE one because it has everything I want and it's right on budget, but I won't know until I try it on. I know nothing about how this stuff works. I think I remember that if a store carries the designer but not the particular dress they can send a sample to the store for you to try on. Does that sound like something they can do? Also, when do designs usually get discontinued? I would call a store, but I dont want people pressuring me to buy right now. I need at least 3-4 months. Any insight on how this all works would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Can't the company arrange to have it sent to a store in NC (if the company is there already)? Your option IMO is that you would have to call the store and ask directly what they can do. If someone tries to tie you into something, be firm. Be open to suggestions on similar dresses also if for some reason they can't get this dress nearby for you to try on. Btw, is there any return policy on the dress? Is it possible to order it, take it to the store and try it on then take it back or exchange if it doesn't fit?

Call the stores in your area that carry the designer. Ask if they can get the dress to try on. If not, try to find one that will order the dress for you in your size if you put down a deposit. By putting the deposit down, you are guaranteeing that you will buy from that store. However, make the deal that if you don't like the dress you can put the deposit towards a dress in the store that you do like. They can sell the ordered dress off their rack. Stores will do this for the guaranteed sale if it's a popular designer that they know they can sell if you don't choose it after trying it on. I actually got a store owner to order two designs I like from Morilee (Madeline Gardner) in my size. I get to try them on and choose the one love, or I choose a different dress from her shop if I don't like the ones she ordered for me. Morilee designs are so popular she knows she can sell them in her store. Maggie Sottero is also very popular. A store owner could easily sell her dresses.

At one point I was looking for this dress as well! It’s so frustrating to keep calling places to find it. I had a store tell me they could get it in stock on loan from the designer if I paid a deposit. And that if I didn’t end up with that dress, my deposit would go towards whatever else I ended up purchasing there. Maybe a shop near you could do that? I didn’t end up following through because the shop didn’t carry many other dresses I liked. When I actually went to try dresses on, I fell in love with something similar so I didn’t end up with Della in the end but it’s a gorgeous dress! Good luck!

If they carry the designer they can get the dress. I fell in love with my dress online, had the bridal shop order a sample, tried it on and knew it was the one right away!!

I would call whatever salon has the designer (that is close to you) and ask them if they can bring a sample in. When I went to try dresses on, I wanted a certain Demetrios dress. Well the consultant told me if I had told her before she could've brought that dress in. But I had found another Demetrios dress way better than what I wanted to bring in. My wedding is October of next year too. You really don't have to buy a dress right then and there.

Go to Maggie Sottero’s website to look up local bridal shops that carry that designer, then call and see if they have that dress in.

I know new designer collections typically come out twice a year. I would try to track down that dress very soon if it came out a year ago. Thanks to my wedding, I now work part time in a bridal shop and dresses are continually discontinued and once this happens they can’t be ordered anymore. ☹️

Isn't it gorgeous! You must have excellent taste. There is a similar one this season but it has slightly less edge. What was the name of the designer you went with, if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you! There is a store nearby that is a "Premium Seller" so I'll probably try there.

    You're welcome!

Wait, I just saw the only store that carries it is in Utah. Have you looked it up on PreOwnedWeddingDresses or Tradesy? You may be able to get it at an even better price. But I don't know what happens if you buy it and it doesn't fit at all???

FYI--bridal sizes are typically 2 sizes bigger than "street sizes." So if you're an 8 in dresses you'd likely be a 12 in bridal dresses. Something to know when you're looking at used bridal dresses online. Make sure you know which kind of size it is and if they had it taken in (totally ok to buy 1-2 sizes bigger but might not be possible to let out a dress, especially if it has already been altered).
