Can't carry dress on

Jimie, on February 5, 2017 at 12:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

So I just got off the phone with Alaska Airlines. She very rudely told me that I can't carry on my wedding dress bag. She said it had to fit in my carry on or be checked.

Has anyone flown Alaska with their dress and carried it on? I'm trying to find another number to call. We leave next Friday so I'm having a small panic attack.

I don't understand. What's the big deal? Why can't you ship it or check it?

You can carry it on as your carry on item. I don't think that person knows what they are talking about.

    Why not just check it?

I'd be nervous to check it in my bag, because if my bag got lost with it, I wouldn't have a dress to wear. I'm guessing that's what OP is worried about

To those asking, it's a big deal because luggage gets lost or doesn't make it the same day you do. It's also a big deal due to wrinkling/damage unless the OP has a structured luggage garment bag for it, which I'm guessing she doesn't since she was planning to carry it on. A lot of airlines let you carry it on and hang it in the captain's closet and if the captain's closet is unavailable, they help you lay it on top of the luggage in the overhead bins to prevent damage or major wrinkles since most brides will only have a steamer available and won't be able to get the gown pressed before the wedding.

OP, I don't have advice except to say try calling a supervisor. Good luck!

I'd say overnight it with fed ex or ups to the hotel or wherever

I haven't personally brought a dress on an airplane, but have traveled on Alaska extensively in the past couple years. I've seen many wedding dresses being brought on (including in my flight to Cancun last week); with the flight attendants even offering to hang it for the bride-to-be. It shouldn't be a problem unless you are trying to bring it AND another carry on bag for you since regulations are one carry on per passenger.

I think you'll have better luck when you arrive to the airport. No guarantee that it will happen but I'm on a lot of destination wedding boards and rarely hear brides have problems. A lot of them are traveling to resorts or locations known to host DW so I'm unsure if this makes a difference but keep trying!

We went to Italy for my sister's wedding and she carried hers on with no problem! The flight attendants even stored it for us in the pilot's closet. Never any questions asked or problems and that's internationally so I can't understand why Alaska airlines would be giving you trouble.

Well for starters I'm not checking my dress. Too much risk

After my panic. I called back and spoke to a guy who was much kinder and he said yes, no problem. And that sometimes the flight crew will take it and closet it for better transport. I'm feeling much better now.
