Cannot have sterno at wedding :(

Nicole, on March 5, 2018 at 2:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So, in asking my venue if they allowed candles as table decor my contact confirmed that they don't allow open flame, including sterno UNLESS you are a licensed and insured catering company. It's a small lodge at a country park. Unfortunately, we're DIYing a lot things and had only planned to set up a rustic pizza/ taco/ nacho bar from our favorite restaurants. (Both restaurants offer "catering" packages and delivery, but they don't provide an attendant and I'm pretty sure they would not cover us with their insurance).

If we time it so that the food arrives during the cocktail hour and leave it in the venue's oven on warm, do you foresee an issue with food getting cold? Anyone else have this issue?

Did you use electric warmers?

TIA

I would hire a licensed and insured catering company to avoid any issues. I wouldn't take a chance on something like that.

Yes the food will get cold quickly. Cold tacos are yuck and I have only ever eaten cold pizza while hungover.

I would get a licensed caterer. Congealed nacho cheese is not something I'd want to serve my guests, sorry.

The food will get cold and gross very quickly, you need to find an alternative solution. Is there a company in your area that provides servers and equipment rentals? Maybe you could hire them (and be covered by their insurance). If not, you will need to quickly come up with another catering option.

I have to first say, I agree with all of you! Problem is, my FH is pro-DIY in every way possible to save $$. . Heck, he originally wanted to DJ the reception himself (he used to DJ weddings in his pre-corporate America days lol), and in leiu of hiring a bartender he thought guests could just "grab a drink from the fridge in the venue's kitchen". Let me tell you, there has been one jaw dropping comment after another with this one, LOL. And the weird part is he attends and presents at very high-end corporate conferences and events, so I don't know where this super frugality is coming from.

Anywho, I think I'm going to have to put my foot down on the catering thing, and find a caterer that can do a tasty authentic taco and pizza bar. (Either way, we do want to have those types of menu items, because they are our favorites; not just to save $$. I just don't want them to be cold!) Smiley winking

That's a good question. In a perfect world I'd love to still be able to include his favorite taco place, bc he's so particular about his tacos lol. But we definitely need an attendant and catering company to get around the sterno issue. I will look into this!

I'd ditch the DIY idea and the drop off food. That food is going to cool, congeal, clot, and become dangerous quickly.

Please take a hard look at your budget and find a way to hire a caterer who can send attendants.

I get your FH being frugal - I am a total budget girl myself. However when it comes to the guests at your wedding please have your future hubby loosen the pursestrings. A lot. Self catering a always a bad idea, it sets up issues with illnesses, liability and do you really want your family and friends working on that day? Taco Bars/ Mexican food can be done on a budget. Prepping for tacos is A LOT of work.

Get with a catering company, girl!!!

Oh, yeah, at first he talked about making tacos himself because he's a pretty good cook. I instantly shot that idea down! More than just the frugality part of things, I think he's just not realizing the complexity of a wedding and all the details that are going to cause us way more work than it's worth. He's approaching this like a large scale party that everyone can pitch in for - while not being fully aware of what a headache all of that is going to cost.

I plan fundraising events for a living, so I'm used to having to turn out a a fabulous reception on a dime, but I have to draw the line at diy-ing some things. I think he's just so used to being on the attendee side of finer affairs and not on the planner side, so he just doesn't get it! lol. And I'm going to be the one ending up stressed when it doesn't go as planned. So I'm gonna have to push back on this one.
