Candy Buffet/Cup cake table vs cake

Stephanie, on January 10, 2015 at 2:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Will it be tacky, cheap, etc if I choose to have a candy buffet bar with cupcakes and maybe macaroons as dessert vs having a wedding cake?

Thoughts/suggestions on this?

Also if ANYONE has any recommendations for reasonably priced venues, bakeries, photographers, etc. in the DC, MD, or VA area please let me know!

I don't think it will be tacky or cheap.

We are going to have a small cake with tiers of cupcakes for dessert, and a candy buffet as our favor. I guess I might be a little biased then, lol.

No, it wouldn't be tacky or cheap. Although, we aware that often candy bars end up costing more than people expect (especially if you get the good candy!).

It's definitely not cheap, but I hate cupcakes at a wedding, no matter how informal it is.

I think a lot of us are going this route now. I'm doing a 6" cake and cupcakes.

Why the hate on cupcakes A&J? It really isn't much different than eating a piece of cake. Except it's cheaper (depending where you get them from)

I actually think a cupcake on your plate is much more beautiful than a slice of cake. Usually more moist too.

This will not be cheap by any means. If you're only doing it to save money, you won't. My candy buffet was close to 1k...which was definitely more than my cake.

I went to a wedding and let me tell you... they spent A LOT A LOT A LOT on their wedding(it was my aunt). And they had macaroons. So cheap or tacky? Absolutely NOT. Plus, no cake cutting yay! That part always weirds me out I think... Maybe because I'm like "GIVE ME MY CAKE RAWWWWR". But picking up a cupcake/filling a bag of candy is so fun! And cute!

Sorry I'm a butt... but I had more to say. I don't mind cupcakes at weddings. I think everyone has their own preference, and style, too. For me, my wedding is totally rustic/not black tie/super formal. And we might do a small cake/cupcakes(because while I'm against the cake cutting being a "thing" I do like a style of cake!) Maybe that's an option! Having a small, itty-bitty cake and cupcakes to go along with it! I love the idea of saving cake for your 1 year anniversary, which is also a big reason why I want a little cake to go with everything else!

That is what we are doing. I don't like cake at all so we are having a desert bar with doughnuts, cupcakes, cookies, and various other deserts. From all the pictures I have seen looking on pinterest it can come out super cute.

Also my FH is a super nerd and his only request for the wedding was that he had a sword so we are going to "cut the cake" using a muffin and his sword which I am actually pretty excited for!

Sorry but I just think candy buffets (no matter what you spend) are super tacky. Like where am I, a 5 year Olds birthday party?

I don't know how to eat cupcakes elegantly so I'm more of a traditional cake person myself, but you do you. Your way is definitely growing more popular but I'm not sure if it really cuts cost or is just a personal preference. Good luck.

You can eat cupcakes just like any piece of cake, with a fork. You don't have to eat it with your hands. We'll make sure to serve on plates so people can eat with a fork.

Just an FYI, I priced out a "cupcake cake tower" vs a wedding cake and it was more expensive than the cake ! So don't think it will be "cheaper" cause it won't necessarily be cheaper.

Do you not want to do a cake cutting ceremony or have the cake to take home , put in your freezer and eat on your anniversary ???

We're doing a cake and dessert buffet. No cupcakes

We did cupcakes from Custom Cake Design in Gaithersburg MD. They were more than amazing and more that reasonable. I want to say, off the top of my head, the total price, including delivery, set up, and cake stand rental, was about $475 for 120 cupcakes plus the top tier for our cutting ceremony. We could have done 96 for less. The flavors were beyond amazing and the service was so worth the price. I highly recommend them.

I also don't care for cupcakes or candy buffet at weddings. Not because they look cheap and tacky, but because I don't feel like they belong at a wedding. As FutureMrsC said, is this a birthday party? Cupcakes and candy are fine for a shower, but not a wedding reception. Doing multiple unstacked cakes can give you a more mature feel without the cost of a stacked cake. Some people are against it, but fake cake tiers with just enough real for you to cut plus a sheet cake in the back can also work.

Now, if you are doing a buffet because you don't like cake, than try more sophisticated desserts than cupcakes and candy- like your macaroons, mini pies, cannoli, etc. It will elevate your party to an adult soiree (no matter how forma/informal) instead of feeling like a child's free for all.

    Just my two cents.
