Cancelling Makeup Artist

Kristin, on February 13, 2018 at 2:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

Hi y'all,

So I signed a contract with a makeup artist and a separate hair stylist for my wedding day. After a budget check, I realized that we had spent too much overall and that things needed to be cut. So, I decided that the makeup artist was the least necessary vendor. I had put a $100 deposit down for her services, but that's it. The only thing in the contract that talks about cancellation is this:

"All changes and cancellations must be made no later than three weeks before wedding date".

If that's all that is stated in the contract, there should be no consequences, besides losing my deposit, by canceling with just the makeup artist, yes? It's five weeks out from my wedding date. I guess I'm just freaking out a bit - I've never had to cancel with someone before. I also want to keep my hair stylist, who is also on the contract.

This may be pretty simple to some people, but I'd appreciate everyone's advice. Thank you!

Your hair stylist is on the same contract? If so, cancelling might not be so simple. At first glance, it appears you would be OK to cancel and forfeit the deposit, but the hair stylist causes a complication. Does the hair stylist not work independently and have her/his own contract?

Yes that sounds correct to me.

How much is the makeup total? Asking because if you have already given 100.00 and the fee for the makeup is 150.00...you see where I am going with this probably.

So the makeup artist would be doing the makeup of me and four bridesmaids. The total came out to be $625. The hair stylist is on the same contact; the makeup artist works with the salon that I'm using, so that's why. The hair stylist and the makeup artist are both being paid separately and they both got their own individual deposits.

Are you cancelling the makeup for your BMs as well?

Yeah, after talking with them, they agreed that they wanted to cancel as well. So all five of us are cancelling. But the deposit was for the whole service, the $625, which I assume covers all of us. I guess my thing is that, there was no mention of other fees or things like that. So, legally, she can't charge me for anything else, I assume.

But I'm not sure, so that's why I'm here ><

I would just be cautious and make sure that cancelling the makeup artist doesn’t also cancel the hairstylist since they’re on the same contract.

    Gotcha.

To me it seems like you would just lose the deposit but you really have to call the MUA and find out for certain.

Thank you for everyone's quick responses! It seems that my biggest concern will be my hair stylist cancelling due to it being on the same contract. I reached out to her to see if it was going to be a problem. I'll hopefully hear back soon from both the makeup artist and the hair stylist. I'm totally fine with losing the deposit - it's my fault anyway. I just know that I'd rather lose $100 then spend over $600 on a service than I'd rather spend on something else.

Since we don't have the full contract I would call and talk to the MUA about it- she might be willing to lower her fee or let you know if there would be anything further.
