Canceling March 2021 Wedding?

Maggie, on August 26, 2020 at 9:53 AM Posted in New Jersey Planning 0 2

My fiancee and I got engaged on March 8, 2020 - a day or two before everything started to shut down because of the virus. After picking March 20, 2021 as our wedding day, we went back and forth with deciding whether to have a small, cheap wedding or a somewhat larger one. We decided on the somewhat larger one. We naively thought that things with the virus would've calmed down by next March, but now we're reconsidering. The problem is that in June we booked a venue for around 60 guests (many from out of state and generally older). We signed the contract and put down a $2,000 deposit. We made sure that the contract included the ability for us to reschedule our event due to the virus - it says that in the event that we can't have the wedding on March 20 we have up to a year past our original date to reschedule. However, with things the way they are now, we asked our venue if it would be possible now to reschedule our event and they said they are currently only rescheduling weddings that were planned through October 31. We have our next 50% payment due in September, but I am freaking out about giving them any extra money at this point since we most likely won't be able to have a wedding next March. We'd have to send Save the Dates soon and some of my bridesmaids have said they won't feel comfortable attending until there is a vaccine available, so it seems silly to plan. We want to schedule a meeting with our venue in the next few days to talk through our options, but right now we are considering canceling altogether and losing the $2,000 deposit. We'll just plan a small wedding with around 20 guests for next March instead. I am feeling really dumb right now for even booking our venue when we did. Has anyone else considered or already canceled their 2021 wedding? Is losing the $2,000 worth it for peace of mind?

Hi Maggie! Your venue sounds a lot like mine. We are April 2021 and have a huge deposit due next month so we are weighing options. We have several family members, including parents, who basically said they won't feel comfortable without a vaccine and who knows if that will be available next spring or not. Unfortunately, we feel like we have to make a decision before we pay our next large deposit. I really don't know what to do, but I can't imagine moving forward with so many people feeling uncomfortable and so many unknowns. We're leaning towards cancelling and having a small wedding with immediate family next spring and a bigger party in 2022. I'm just struggling because I wish there was more clarity around what next spring will look like. I don't have much of an answer for you, but I totally feel what you're going through right now.

Our April 2020 wedding was bumped so we're scheduled for March 2021 as well. Unfortunately, our venue doesn't allow cancellations and they're charging a significant amount to change the date "again." We're going to cut our guest list significantly and proceed with a ceremony and dinner. It's so stressful with the uncertainty, but I am coming around to a new wedding that can be more personal and intimate... even though it is nothing like I'd originally planned. It's taken me a solid 5 months to get to this point though, and I completely understand your stress!!

At the end of the day, it's a huge cost regardless of what you choose (canceling or proceeding) but 25 years from now, we'll look back on the wedding as the start of our marriage, and the cost will (hopefully) be forgotten. Do what you'll feel confident talking about decades from now!
