We have been joking some time about eloping... I originally wanted the big wedding but we bought a house and doing the wedding just doesnt seem like the smart idea. We are now 4 weeks out and ready to cancel it and eloping. I am needing a cute way to announce that the wedding is cancelled and we are...

Did you not have contracts for your other vendors? This close to the wedding date, we would have still owed the full amount to almost all of our vendors. The closer to the wedding date, the more we would have owed.

I want the party. Not having my dream wedding was never an option for me. We hadn't planned on having to buy a new house right before . I am sorry I didnt ask for advice in the verbiage you all would have liked.

Agreed. We aren’t mind readers OP. You never even hint that circumstances have changed for you in your post. Just that you bought a house (which lots of engaged people do before their wedding) and that you’ve been joking about eloping.

No we didnt. Due to a high chance of rain, and the venue wont let us be there if it rains, we don't have to pay anything until the day of.

We have also though about eloping but it didn't last longer than a few minutes as our family would be so sad and friends have been waiting for us to get married forever plus we are super far out but already have the BP picked and everything and would nice having family and friends with us ♡ we are making both house and wedding work knowing in the end that is what we want and would regret eloping. I couldn't imagine adding the stress of eloping 4 weeks out! Goodluck

This isn't about "verbiage". You left out critical information that completely changes how to interpret your situation. Context matters. You should have stated in your initial post that there was an emergency, but instead for some reason you made it sound like it was just a matter of having your priorities change.

I would personally call people and say that due to unforeseen events the wedding has been cancelled and you will be eloping privately. There is no cute way to say it, just be forth-write.

I personally would return gifts that you've already received as well.

I don't agree with every one else, mostly because they all assumed you have guests booking flights, hotel stays, etc.If you do have guests who have done so, hotel visits can be cancelled and / or refunded so that isn't a big deal.. flights may be an issue though but assuming that may not be an issue, I think mailing something with one of your nice engamemt pictures that says "Oops.. we eloped. Nothing fancy, just love" or something funny like that. I would laugh.

I definitely get where you're coming from though. My fiance and I were originally planning a wedding with about 50 people or so and decided to elope as well in Hawaii with immediate family. Our wedding though is still pretty far out so if anyone still wanted to at least come and celebrate with us after and take a mini vacation, then great but it's not expected.

But a month is definitely not enough time. Especially for those who might have been traveling out. Hopefully, whatever people bought is refundable. I would honestly be pretty upset to find out a month out that there's no more wedding. If everyone you invited are local, then I guess it isn't so bad. Do you happen to have anyone that's traveling? Plus what about all your deposits and such? Do you get ANYTHING back from canceling?

What did you end up doing? Considering the same 2 months out. And yes while my guests may have to cancel a hotel reservation, quite frankly most people will just forget about it after the initial WOW. I get annoyed because people seem to forget a wedding is about two people spending their life together and NOT about other people being there to watch it and their experience. A wedding is for everyone else invited- not fully the bride:groom because you feel the need to meet everyone’s expectations of what is at a wedding. Quite frankly this is why I want to cancel my wedding. I just don’t care about that stuff, I just want to be married.
