Cancel my wedding or wait it out??

Megan, on March 16, 2020 at 8:43 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17
Guys my destination wedding is schedule for April 20th in Puerto Rico. All of our guests booked their travel months ago and are coming from all areas of the US. We had a total of 40 guests but now people are starting to cancel. I’m such a mess right now as we’ve been planning this wedding for 2 years and I don’t know what to do. Should I wait it out or cancel now? The uncertainty of it all is what’s really stressing me the most, I need answers. Please help.

Has air travel been restricted to Puerto Rico yet? Are all of your guests still willing to travel? If I were in your shoes, I would probably go ahead and cancel. I don't see things getting any better for at least the next 8 weeks.

I would go ahead and cancel/reschedule. If I was your guest I would also be cancelling. I have a trip on May 15th that I'm considering cancelling. April is coming quick. Sorry that this has affected your wedding.

My family had flights booked for today to Puerto Rico and they were cancelled. It also appears that airlines are reducing the number of individuals on flights... so even if it’s not cancelled, there might be issues with limited space, long lines, and people being turned away. I would stay to keep an open eye and talk to your vendors. Ask them if they have a plan... put the pressure on them to make it happen so you alleviate some stress.

I’m sorry you’re going through this... my little sister is getting married on April 11 and I’m supposed to be flying across the US very soon. I can’t imagine the stress brides and grooms are undergoing.

I am supposed to get married April 3rd there and we’re going to postpone. Going along with what others said, in addition to CDC and government restrictions, United came out and said they would be cancelling about 50% of their flights for April and May so I wasn’t hopeful my Tuesday 8am flight would be happening anyway lol. I figured it’s best to set up a contingency plan now in case things get worse. Our parents are 60+ and many important older family members have pulled out already which is understandable.

It sucks this is happening but it’s really out of our control. For 48 hours we thought we would push through since social distancing before the wedding might help (it’s Incredible what has changed in the span of a few days!). but it became apparent it’s not worth the risk and there would be a somber/anxious cloud over the day regardless.
For a mid April wedding, I think you could wait another week and reassess. Everything is literally changing hour by hour so it’s hard to make a decision until you absolutely have to. PR has gone through things like this that shook the event industry before, like with Hurricane Maria so I’m hopeful vendors will be more than willing to accommodate. They have family to worry about to and I assume would like your business regardless the day.
I’m trying to keep positive and think well, after this is over, at least everything has been planned already so I may actually be able to enjoy the moments leading up to my wedding a little more now! Maybe even get these arms and back a little more toned at this point (but it hasn’t happened in two years so it probably ain’t happening now lol).
Good luck and I’m here if you need to talk more!

Hi Megan - I was also planning on getting married in Puerto Rico in April. I’ve been watching TripAdvisor and San Juan is pretty much shut down and probably will be for the foreseeable future. People are mentioning that restaurants aren’t open and Old San Juan is empty with a lot of the tourist shops being closed. Even if you do have a small wedding, unfortunately given the circumstances, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a relaxing vacation for any of our family members. I’m currently trying to postpone my wedding. Please feel free to reach out if you want to vent. I also feel awful knowing that all of our guests already booked their travel and accommodations.

The CDC says to cancel or postpone any large gatherings for 8 weeks. My wedding is April 18th and I'm not cancelling or postponing my wedding. I'm going to just make it something smaller. No more than 50 people including my caterer, photographer, DJ, pastor and day of coordinator. I'm just trying to stay positive and keep people safe. Good Luck

Honestly, and this is going to be harsh, public health and safety is paramount over anyone's wedding. In fact, I'm a professional in the wedding industry, and I've just advised all my brides and grooms to cancel or postpone their March and April weddings. We're about 10-14 days behind Italy when it comes to the virus and their initial casual feelings about the virus have now lead to a country-wide lockdown and hundreds of deaths. Contact between people (even those feeling totally fine) can spread the virus on to people who are at risk (immunocompromised in some way) super quickly, and in order to give medical professionals an opportunity to get a handle on things, staying home and not going to any non-essential appointments or outings is pertinent. They're closing down restaurants, bars, and theaters, and people get much closer (hugging, celebrating, sitting in aisles/pews) to each other at weddings than they do at those places.

Sorry about how things have turned out for you individually here--it's definitely been frustrating for brides and grooms getting married anytime soon. Unfortunately, I'd strongly suggest postponing.

Puerto Rico has a travel ban out now. They don't want anyone in the streets after 8.

I was aware of the curfew they enforced today with business from 6am-9pm which is effective until March 30th but I wasn’t aware of a travel ban

Thank you all for sharing-you all confirmed what I was afraid of and with new developments we were forced to cancel our April wedding.

I received news from California, where my family lives and they have now enforced a 24hr quarantine for the next 3 weeks with my Mom’s PTO being canceled for our wedding. My Mom not being able to attend my wedding sealed the deal for us.
I wish you all the best of luck with your own weddings and your safety (and sanity) during this time. I’m sorry the world is such a crazy place right now but it will get better. Love and happiness to you guys.
