Can you get paper married during a "shelter in place" ordinance? - Michigan

Candice, on March 24, 2020 at 10:28 AM Posted in Michigan Planning 0 8

Hey ladies and gents,

So my wedding ceremony/ celebration is not scheduled until July (hopefully we won't have to cancel) but my fiance and I have thought about getting paper or courthouse married before then just to put him on my health insurance plan. We live in Michigan and while I can stay at home he is a local delivery driver ("essential worker") who does not receive health insurance or sick leave from his employer. We are very concerned that while he is delivering life saving food to the community that he might catch the virus and not be able to get treated due to being uninsured. We frankly had a hard time understanding how to get paper married before this and now we feel stuck or that it is too late. Does anyone know anything that could help?

You should try and call your local courthouse. I would assume they are closed and you will have to wait.

No... those offices aren’t “essential” and therefore wouldn’t be open during a “shelter in place” order. At least that’s the case here in San Diego. However, Google “civil marriages” for your city/county and it should lead you to the government’s website with info.

I would call your local clerk but in California weddings aren’t allowed during shelter in place. So I imagine other states would be similar.

Probably not. We are not under shelter in place and our courthouse has shut down that office.

Massachusetts has a stay at home advisory, so most things are closed, but City Hall is still open for things you can't do online, like getting a marriage license. They're just asking people to call before you go in so it's easier to enforce social distancing, so I would call your local town/city hall, or one in any city you can get to. It doesn't have to be where you actually live and ask them. You could also try calling 311 or 211. A lot of cities/areas use those numbers to help people access city/local services. If none of that helps, Google, "how to get married in [your city]." You probably won't get specific coronavirus related advice, but the articles might give you an idea of who you should call.
    Good luck!

Is the marriage bureau open in the state you want to get married? I’m thinking of doing the same thing with my fiancé. He wants to get me on his insurance, and we had to postpone our original date for later in the year :/

It depends on what county you are in. You have to apply at the county clerk for whatever county is the legal residence for you or your groom. I’m going through this too right now and I am also from Michigan. Some counties are allowing you to apply online and pick up the license curb-side. Some are not open at all. It’s being handled differently from county to county. Neither my county nor my fiancé’s county are issuing marriage license at the time.
