Can i salvage this custom made dress? Dress regret

Denise, on October 10, 2019 at 12:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
Hi guys,

So I decided to get a custom made dress for my wedding in May. First pic is the inspo except I wanted a spaghetti strap and the second pic is the actual dress. I’m so disappointed by it and currently don’t feel confident wearing it. The dress does not fit me right and will need alterations. I assumed that custom made dresses should fit to a T but my dressmaker said she only meant the design to be customized and not the fit! Imagine my horror when I heard that! My jaw dropped and felt I was cheated. I thought alterations/fit customization were included! How can she call it custom when it doesn’t custom fit me?!?!? She even took my measurements! Ugh! It was my mistake for hiring her and not clearing it up! Now I’m having major dress regret!

But, I figured I have two options right now... 1) spend money on the alterations but be unsure of the outcome of the dress OR 2) just purchase the dress I fell in love with which inspired the design of my custom dress?

Alteration of the custom dress AND buying a new dress is not an option because I’d rather not spend extra money on the custom one since the unaltered version might sell easier/faster. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Btw, I spent $1500 for this custom made dress yet she still didn’t get the strap right (that’s why there are two side by side pics). PS: If you are in the Los Angeles area, please suggest a good alteration shop. Thanks in advance!

I would get the alterations to take in the waist, that's the only thing that's really standing out to me. Beautiful dress! They look almost identical in my opinion (aside from the straps), I wouldn't go buy the first dress after all you've spent on the second one. It shouldn't cost much at all to take in the waist a bit.

I am honestly shocked that she didn't make it fit you!! Did you sign a contract or anything to go back on? I think after alterations, it'll be perfect! It's already a beautiful gown and it's almost to your vision with a few minor changes. I think it would be cheaper to adjust then to pay for another dress, but you have to be 100% in love with it! Can she fix the straps? If not, perhaps your alterations seamstress can..

I think if she alters it you will love. I’m surprised that she didn’t take your measurements to start and make it to fit you since it was “custom”.

That’s crazy that she didn’t make it to your measurements...but I think taking in the waist will make a huge difference. I agree not to buy a whole new dress. This can be salvaged!!

I would also do the alterations. Taking it in a bit can make a world of difference! I'm sure this will help you fall in love with your dress!

Do the alterations, have her alter the waist area so it fits better. And if you want, get a petticoat to wear under the dress to help with volume. It will be ok!!!

Altering to fit perfectly will make a huge difference! It's hard to tell if the bottom is a little more full in the inspiration dress, if that's part of your issue maybe a slip would help!
