Can I just vent?

I just need a moment to whine and complain to the wedding masses so I don't gripe to my loved ones. We started planning our July 2020 wedding back in July 2018. After two long years, we were so excited to get married in July. Then COVID hit. After a little time to grieve, we decided to postpone the wedding to this November. Not ideal, but we'd deal with it if it meant we were able to have the wedding we had planned on.

August rolls around and our venue tells us that they will most likely not be having any receptions this year and will be allowing ceremonies only with a cap of 50 people (we had 115 RSVP yes prior to postponing the first time). Since that wasn't what we envisioned, we decided we'd elope with just parents (mini-ceremony if you would prefer that wording) and do our reception next year when it's safe (hopefully) for large crowds. This decision was easier than the first postponement, and I was actually really looking forward to our planned destination elopement to Yosemite.

Unfortunately, Labor Day weekend saw a major fire start about 30 miles south of Yosemite. We've been monitoring the containment and air quality in the valley for two weeks, hoping it would get better. As of an hour or so ago, the National Park Service announced that Yosemite will be closing indefinitely until the air quality is better. Now, let me preface by saying this is definitely the right decision, especially for those who live and work in the park. The last thing I would ever want is for people to be working/vacationing/etc in unhealthy conditions. But, that means we are now scrambling to figure out a Plan D for our ceremony, which is taking place next Thursday. It's going to happen regardless, but man, I'm really freaking tired of 2020 trying to teach me to be flexible. I've been laughing since I found out because it's honestly comedic at this point, but I'm almost worried about making more plans because I'm afraid something will come along and screw them up! Thanks for reading the novel. Off to go find a place in the area that will allow us to have a quick ceremony next week.

I think it’s open as my bakery had a Cake & Cocktails event scheduled there last weekend. I’ll definitely check it out!

It has just been nuts for you and others caught in this mess. You know what they saw about a bad dress rehearsal being followed by a great opening night? well I hope when you get through this mess, and have your real wedding that it will be awesome, as great as this year's efforts were awful. Hang in there, a little bit longer.

Thank you! I think I’ve already narrowed down a couple choices for our ceremony and my absolutely incredible, amazing, couldn’t-ask-for-better photographers are willing to come and shoot for an hour to capture the ceremony while also still being up for a trip to Yosemite for a post-wedding shoot in our wedding clothes later this fall (hopefully!). We’re (I’m) back on the positive wagon with the help of everyone here and in our real-world. It’s going to be a perfect day because I’m marrying my love...I just needed to take a minute to get the negative out!

That sounds like A Lot, and you have every right to vent.

I hope you can find a safe, breathable! space!

Thank you! We’re going to be good...just so much to process (while also trying to figure out how I’ll be teaching kids in the classroom and online simultaneously when I return from the wedding). Actually got enough sleep last night to feel rested and I’m feeling ready to get everything lined up!

I don't know how far you are from Fresno, CA, but my venue, San Joaquin River Parkway is doing micro-wedding and elopement packages for $450. It's a beautiful venue. So sorry this had to happen.

Thanks, Rhiamae. We actually got married this past Thursday down here in Orange County. Got it done, even though we ended up on Plan E!

Doesn't it just feel like you're cursed to not get your wedding? ugh!!! i'm so sorry for this happening. My heart is breaking for you and everyone else who has already suffered from covid ruining their weddings, only to now get their back up plans ruined too... Honestly, at that point i'd do an elizabeth swann/william turner (Pirates of the Caribbean reference) moment and just find the nearest officiant and be like MARRY US NOW!

But here's some encouragement and i mean every word of it: this too will pass. You're doing ok despite the crappiness. Just hold on a little longer and keep laughing and remember you'll have quite a story to tell one day too...

update - oooh i see you got married!! congrats! i hope that brought some happiness and relief to you!

Haha, thank you! It brought relief in the sense that, as a teacher, I can now focus on getting myself prepared for teaching both in-person students and virtual students at the same time starting this Friday. Our photographers are incredible and we'll be planning a getaway to Yosemite in the next month or so to take pictures...so that's something to look forward to! It was all out of our control, so nothing really to be done other than continue moving forward despite the roadblocks; I tend to focus on solving problems rather than whining about them, but I definitely needed to take a minute to complain before reframing my mind to solve it!
