Can a veil be shortened?

Aidan (Mrs. Cowgell!), on January 24, 2012 at 12:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I found a beautiful veil, brand new with tags, on preownedweddingdresses.com that I love, and for $75 with an original price of $169 (bought as a gift and the bride eloped!), but it's a little longer than I want. Plus, from what I can see, all of the pretty detailing that I love is near the bottom. What I want to know is if it is possible to shorten a veil by removing material from the top portion? It's a beautiful veil and a great price, but a little long.

It could be shortened but you would have a seam. I don't know if it would give you the same look. I had a family veil "altered" but it was lace all around, so you can't tell that it wasn't that way to begin with.

Maybe you might be able to find a seamstress who can replicate that design on tulle you buy yourself? That way it's exactly what you want.

Probably not for the same price. I'm wondering why there would be a seam. Couldn't they just detach it from the comb, remove a portion and then regather and reattach it to the comb?

Maybe they could remove comb, take off the extra length from that end & then reattach the comb? That way the detail on the bottom would be intact. It sounds fairly easy. Go talk to a seamstress. I'm pretty sure it's not a difficult task.

Oh! Yes! Totally someone could do that. For some reason I was thinking it had to be shortened from the bottom, I don't know why.

But yes, that would be pretty easy to do. That way you can also have the "pouf" tailored to exactly what you want, based on the way they regather the veil at the comb.

That's exactly what I was thinking, which is why I was wondering why there would be a seam if I asked to have it made shorter.

Fantastic! Hmmm, now to see if I can find it locally to try on before I order it.

Your idea to remove a portion of it by the comb may work, but it depends on the shape of the veil pattern. When you cut it, the place you cut it at may have more or less fabric than the top originally did, giving you too much gathering or too little gathering. From the photo I think the pattern is a straight shape at the sides, so I think it should work. It's really hard to say without seeing it in person though, I would show the photos to your seamstress first to see if she thinks it is do-able.

I'm going to see if I can find one near me to look at first, and take plenty of pictures. I may even ask the alterations people at the bridal store I find it at (if I do). If it can't be shortened that way without it turning out weird, maybe I can find a way to bustle or gather it, kind of like the skirt of my dress.

You should be able to have it shortened without a problem. I agree removing the comb and shortening it fron the top would be the best way.

Awesome! If anyone has any suggestions on who the designer might be, it would be hugely appreciated. I can't tell what the style number is from the photo of the tag.
