Can a deacon perform a marriage outside of a church?

Susan, on June 9, 2019 at 7:36 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6

I have a family friend that is a deacon in the catholic church that I have always hoped would officiate my wedding. Are deacons allowed to officiate weddings outside of a church? Our wedding will be at a golf course outdoors. I did not want to put him on the spot right away without knowing, so I thought I'd start here. Thanks!

That I know of, not really. If you want the ceremony to be recognized in the catholic church, it has to be in a church. Also are you going to be receiving communion? That will have to be performed by a priest. Can I ask why you dont want it at a church?

I was raised Catholic, but have moved away from the church a bit for personal reasons. My fiance is not Catholic, but we are both Christians. Our marriage will not be recognized in the Catholic church, and we aren't planning on communion. Basically, we are very close with our friend that is a deacon and want him to do the ("non-catholic") wedding ceremony, but weren't sure if he is allowed to (under the rules of the church but also didn't know if deacons are qualified legally?). Sorry if that's confusing!

That makes sense. I dont know how will work. I guess as long as he's ordained. But itll just be someone marrying. You can go to such forums as catholic answers. It's a pretty knowledgeable site.

My uncle is a priest and will not perform a ceremony that isn’t a catholic ceremony in the church. I don’t know if that was his personal preference or a “rule” but I would likely lean towards the Deacon likely won’t do the non denomination ceremony

It’s worth it to ask. The worst he can do is say no. I’ve seem catholic weddings outside (they had to get the location approved) so they do do them.
