Calluses from ring won’t go away

Bridget, on March 5, 2019 at 11:11 PM Posted in Community Conversations 2 11
Hi everyone! So when my fiancé proposed, the ring was a size 4 and it was too big. When the jeweler resized it they took it down to a 3.5 and it was too small. I had it that way for about a week and during that time my knuckle became super irritated because it was so hard to get my ring off. My ring is now a 3.75 and it fits perfectly, but these calluses won’t go away! The scrapes that were originally there have healed and now it’s just a callus. Is there anything I can do to make them go away? They’ve been there for over a month now!

The same thing happened to me and I gradually (I think it was probably over four months or so) got rid of them by gently brushing them with a pumice stone while in the shower. Gently is key - I was too aggressive the first few times and they became raw and painful. Another (possibly better) option would be OTC callus removers.

Callus's are hard protective skin that forms in order to protect the skin under it from damage. Sometimes this forms after an injury to protect healing skin and sometimes it forms on an area of use or past irritation. If the skin is super hard (like heel callus hard) then you can gently pummus stone the skin in the shower and then use a strong absorbing moisturizer to soften the skin as soon as you get out. I would only recommend that though if you feel the callus is not shedding at all.

From the picture (so obviously not a super in depth look) it looks like it is just a soft callus. Use a really strong moisturizer - something like Dr. Okeefe's - daily. Make sure to use it every time you wash your hands. A lot of moisturizers are actually designed to dry your hands (makes you buy more) so make sure you have one that is legit. (So if you bought it from bath and body works or any similar store because it smelled pretty.... I wouldn't use it) O'Keefe's is a humectant, emollient, and an occlusive all in one. (Humectant's pull moisture from the air to your skin, emollients help it fill in the gaps between skin cells, and occlusives keep the water that is in your skin in). In order to heal callus's you want to have a combo of these during the day. Other skin care products do similar things, I just like my brand. Over time the callus will fade and eventually disappear - but it should happen slowly or you risk damaging the very delicate skin under the callus.

I was a dancer in college so how to treat callus's was essentially an unofficial class as it was part of the daily life. It does take a while, but it will fade with regular moisturizer use. If you are worried about pictures or something and seeing the red marks, you could always dab a slight amount of concealer/foundation on that area before a photo shoot and no one will ever know.

I had this same exact thing happen for the same exact reason. I freaked out at first because it was really noticeable and looked really bad. Fortunately, once the ring was sized correctly and wasn’t irritating my knuckle, it eventually healed on its own. It did take about a month though. I picked at it more than I should have but I also moisturized a lot as a PP mentioned.

Also, just wanted to say that we have very similar fingers...very thin with slightly bigger knuckles. (Probably also why we ended up with the same issue!) I’m thinking about having sizing beads put into my ring. I need it to be a 4 to get over my knuckle but then it just spins and spins. My actual finger is a 3.75 but then I can’t get it over my knuckle.

I have exactly the same issue with my finger shape & my e-ring is very large so it spins a lot. Did you find sizing beads that work? If yes, please share. I tried one type of ring adjuster from Amazong & it didn’t work at all.

I’ve not gotten sizing beads yet. If I do, I’ll wait until after the wedding because I don’t want them on my ring for the detail shots. I’ve bought this type of plastic coil sizer from Amazon. They aren’t pretty but you hardly see it when the ring is on and they work really well. You cut them to the length you need.

Thanks! That’s the one I was just looking at on Amazon. Glad to hear it works! You don’t have to take the sizer on & off when you take your ring on/off, right?

Nope, it just stays on all the time. I’d take mine off every couple of weeks to clean it

This is so old but did you manage to fix this problem?! I'm having the exact same one. My left ring finger has those bumps and also just looks so much bigger than my other fingers!
