Calling all chemists! Science unity ceremony?

Emily, on February 7, 2017 at 11:40 AM Posted in Community Conversations 1 20

My FH has a bachelors in chemistry and really wants to do some sort of science thing for our unity ceremony. I told him it had to be at least LOOSELY related to love/marriage. Any ideas out there, scientist ladies? The best we've come up with is combining two clear liquids that become pink, but I think he's wanting something more impressive Smiley smile

This is a cute idea. DH is a scientist, and I thought about doing something like this. I'll ask him and get back to you Smiley smile

Keep in mind your venue may have restrictions on anything that would make a mess!

I think combining two test tubes of liquid into a beaker would be adorable!

What about a unity volcano by combining baking soda and vinegar? That the only science/chemistry I know, haha

Haha I ruled a volcano out because he can't come up with a way that it's even vaguely related to marriage. Also I think he wants a shock factor. Volcanoes are far too common, dahling Smiley winking

Well if he is the chemist and he is the one who wants to do this and he is the one who wants something more impressive than liquids turning pink, why doesn't he come up with something? I'm not trying to be snarky, but why is it your job to use his professional background to guess the thing that will please him? Tell him if he wants to do a chemistry unity ceremony you are open to hearing his ideas.

Oh he's definitely in charge of this one. I just thought maybe, with all the experience on here, someone had done/seen something cool. Our Google searches have been to no avail.

Is there anything you could combine to make SAFE pink smoke? If your venue is inside this might not be approved...But if your ceremony is outside you might be able to...And it would be more impressive than just pink liquid.

Volcanoes can now be associated with "I Lava You" - the Pixar short film from "Inside Out". So cute!!

I think this is so cute! I'm a scientist, so I'm definitely biased though! Smiley smile

I'd definitely check with your ceremony location about what is and isn't allowed. We couldn't do anything that could potentially harm our chapel.

My cousin did this: http://offbeatbride.com/glow-stick-unity-ceremony/ they used blue ones instead of green and it was a pretty awesome effect. They left the vase on the table during dinner and it glowed the whole time.

I know burning salts can change to an magenta (potassium) or red (sodium) color...but you have to make sure that those elements are allowed to be burned in your venue. We just did this little experiment in chem but it can be hazardous

Flaming gummy bears can be pink, but that one is tough because you have to keep the potassium boiling. And it makes everything smell like marshmallows,

Elephant toothpaste is the more impressive version of the baking soda volcano, but that one can be messy.

You could try an iodine clock. They can be kind of finicky though. But when they work its nice.

Titrate something with phenolphthalein. That will be pink!

Unfortunately nothing I can think of is very wedding related. Everything is either too messy or looks like you are trying to summon satan. If you are having that kind of wedding, I have the recipe for "Lucifer's squid" or "portal to hell" depending on who you ask, they call it different things!

You could pour water in your colors over dry ice to create a smoke effect.

The only chemistry we work with has exothermic reactions and shrapnel. Sorry dear.

My FH wants to do something like this too, like a titration or something, and i told him I'm not in love w pretending to do my job in a gown. Besides, I wouldn't trust anyone else to handle, set up, and clean up the chemicals and equips. And I'm not doing that work either Smiley smile

    Like MarryingMurphy suggested:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1eG2y2mn54

    Elephant toothpaste.

It's dish soap, 6% hydrogen peroxide and yeast and creates a burst of foam shooting from the container. You can add coloring to make it prettier so pink or your wedding colors.

Control the amount by limiting the amount of reactants. As other posters had said check with your venue's restriction but all this stuff is available on amazon for purchase...

I can't think of anything /super/ wedding related.. it's kinda all high school science teacher demo stuff... not that that is a bad thing!

I thought this one was really cool when I saw it on Offbeat. Very simple too.
