Calligraphy for save the dates??

not_brandi, on January 26, 2017 at 12:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a great night.

So, I've started to look into hiring a calligrapher for my invitations and I've found someone in my area who does a great job. My question is, is this something I should also be doing for save the dates, or are those generally a bit more of a causal thing to send out?

I printed the addresses right onto the envelopes for the save the dates. It's your preference though. If you're hiring someone I think save it for the invites personally

@Laura I noticed that Minted includes that in their services, but was wondering if I do it for one (the invites), do I have to do it for the other? Such a small detail. Idk why I'm even worried about it lol.

If you have the budget for it, then go for it if you want to, but I don't think it's necessary. Personally I think STDs would be more casual and you can do it for the invites instead. I like artsy type of things though so I've actually started learning and practicing myself so I can just do it. I'll probably do a more casual but still nice type of script for STDs and then something a little more "fancy" for invites.

I would say STDs are more casual than wedding invitations and you don't have to do calligraphy for STDs, even if you plan to for your invitations. I do think it would be strange to receive a very beautifully hand addressed, calligraphed STD and then receive a wedding invitation from the same couple that also wasn't addressed in calligraphy. If you're choosing one over the other, do the calligraphy for the invitations.

I ended up diy and treated my STDs as a practice run so I'd be more seasoned when I got ready to address my wedding invitations. I don't think it was necessary that I did fancy addressing for my STDs, but I enjoyed doing it. I don't think I would have done it for STDs if I were paying someone else to do it, though.

I wrote my addresses and return addresses by hand on ours (they don't go out for a month but I am have been making them a little at a time.) I have teacher handwriting so they are very written clearly. I figure in the days of labels they might appreciate hand written envelopes. Smiley smile

There are websites where you can download calligraphy fonts and then print directly on the envelopes. A friend did this for her wedding and they looked beautiful. That's what I plan on doing. I'll see if I can find the site she used.

ETA: http://www.1001fonts.com/calligraphy-fonts.html and http://www.dafont.com are the sites she recommended

STDs are the casual forerunner to the formal invitation, Brandi. If you have the money to hire a calligrapher, save it for the formal invitations. I'm kind of an invitation freak, and I really do look at them carefully. In fact, it takes me years to throw them out. My husband has a cousin who is master calligrapher (this was long before the day of the STD), and she used her skill to hand address every invitation. They were gorgeous. That was in 1981. Guess what? I still have that envelope because, in my opinion, it was art. I can't throw it away.

Don't spend the money having calligraphy done on the STDs. Save the perks, the big reveal, for the wedding invitations.
