Cake vs cupcakes

Adree-Anna, on August 19, 2019 at 7:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
So I need some rough ideas on the cost of a typical wedding cake vs one small cake for cutting and cupcakes for serving. I refuse to pay $400 for a cake (no judgement to anyone who has or will, just not in my budget) and I'm looking for some price points and possibly pictures of cupcakes

Have you thought about a small cake for the cake cutting and then a sheet cake for serving? Then your guests get a piece of cake but it's a lot cheaper.
I personally prefer that over cupcakes

If you are just doing a cutting cake (same as me) I'm just going to purchase a small round cake from whole foods for $32.00 and then cupcakes I have still been getting quotes on but they range from $19.-$32 per dozen for the regular size.. Also I am located in SoCal so I'm not sure how it is everywhere else haha

I’m not sure there’s really an average price. It depends on your location, the experience of the baker, the type of cake/cupcakes you’re going for. We live near Cincinnati and most quotes we got for a small cutting cake were around $60 and cupcakes were anywhere from $2-$3 each.

Same! Cake was one of those things that as long as it tastes good my FH and I didn't care. So we are planning to just get sheet cakes from Costco. $20 for a half sheet that feeds 50. Like literally can't beat that price and costco cakes are really good.

I just got a quote today from my local Albertsons (not sure if you have those where you’re at or not) but a 6” cake was $20 and 4 dozen cupcakes cost $25

Cupcakes may cost a lot too. I’d ask your baker for a small tiered cake to cut & serve and have as many sheet cakes as needed in the back.

That's a great idea, I know smaller bakeries can work wonders with smaller cakes

I think if you got store bought cupcakes it'd be even cheaper ! Because that was something I considered aha after getting tons of quotes for a three tier wedding cake (was like $600 average).

    Ombre cakeCake vs cupcakes 1

We live in an east coast destination town. We searched quite a while for a bakery that would work with us and fit into our budget. I also did not want to pay too much since I'm not a big cake person most of the time. We are getting a 6in one tier cake to cut and ordered 4 dozen cupcakes in different flavors for under $200. We asked that the cake have our colors smeared like the picture. The cupcakes will be decorated like they typically are so guests know what flavor is which.

I was quoted $450 for a cake and for the small cake/cupcake option she had quoted $250.

You should definitely be able to have some significant savings with the cupcake option.

The bakery we looked at (haven’t decided yet) wanted $4.25 per serving and up for cake and $2.50 for cupcakes. Going with the cupcake route will be more affordable in most cases I think (:

Exactly. You can still have a small multiple-tier cake for pics and the cutting ceremony. Guests can be served the same delicious cake, simply sheet style.

Our venue included dessert shots but we really wanted a cake for pics/cutting so we did a one-tier that cost about $120:
