Cake vs cake pops (fyi, there will be ice cream)

Kristen, on December 10, 2022 at 1:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

I have been struggling to decide on dessert for our reception. I know cake is the most traditional route, but neither my fiance and I are cake people. (I know, it's also about the guests...) In addition to what we decide on, the venue we are using offers an ice cream bar for a very good price! Everyone keeps going on about how expensive cake pops are, but if there's going to be ice cream too, we wouldn't necessarily need as much "cake," right? We could do cake pops as, perhaps, "half" of the dessert options and not need to spend a TON of money on pops because that's not the only dessert option, right? I'm open to any thoughts, just trying to get a better perspective!! P.S. I REALLY want cake pops, not regular cake, in case I didn't make that clear already! Smiley smile Thank you all for your input!

Personally I think if you're offering cake pops, you should have a minimum of 1 per guest. Most bakeries would suggest more than that depending on size. I don't think cake is necessary, but anything offered should be available to anyone who wants it.

Every dessert should be minimum one serving per guest. It backfires badly when you have only cake for 20 of 100 people, brownies for 30 of 100 people, ice cream for 10 of 100 people, and so on.

Cake pops are an acquired taste but if you know your guests won’t eat any variation of cake (regular cake, cupcakes, cake ball, etc) which are all from the same recipe, then don’t serve cake. Serve an alternative but make sure there is enough that each guest gets at least one serving equally.

I have a bit of a differing opinion. I’m not a big cake person but cake pops drive me absolutely bonkers because it’s so expensive for 1-2 bites, especially as a wedding order. Also there’s no frosting or depth of flavor because it’s a crumbled ball of cake with icing.
I understand that you don’t like cake, but I’d really recommend doing a small tier instead of cake pops. You only have to have one bite- as you cut the cake together. No one forces you to have a slice after that. I think guests become disappointed when there’s no wedding cake because it can be such a big traditional component for a lot of people so they end up expecting one. Maybe you could get a small box of cake pops for you and your fiancé to share after the reception

I think an ice cream bar is perfectly acceptable! If you feel you need a cake-type alternative, I'd go with cupcakes/donuts/mini bundt cakes (Nothing Bundt Cakes) over cake pops, which tend to be more expensive and just a bite.

I dont get the obsession with cake pops personally. I think they look a lot cuter than anything an rarely taste that good. I'd go with just ice cream bar or cake and ice cream. You'll need enough of both for every guest.
