Cake vendor questions

Amanda, on November 1, 2021 at 7:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I'm looking at vendors for our wedding cake for our wedding next summer. There's a bakery near my home that was my 1st choice (1 hour from my venue) but the owner seems to have ghosted me 🙄.. So I've moved on to exploring other options.

Option 2 is a licensed home kitchen about 2.5 hours from my venue - the prices are good and she can do everything I want but the delivery fee is almost as much as the cake and I'm nervous about them transporting it that far in a vehicle. Both option 1&2 I've seen formal pricing info, deposits are required, etc
The 3rd option is a licensed home kitchen about an hour from our venue - she only charges $25 delivery and her prices are good and she can do everything we want. But we've only communicated via Instagram messenger and she doesn't require a deposit/contract. This makes me super nervous.
There are a couple options that are much closer to my venue but I don't like their work as much but price/delivery would be so much easier.
My questions are- how far is too far to have a cake delivered from AND is it weird for a vendor not to require a deposit or anything formalized?

Personally I’d try to make it work with the bakery. 2.5 hours is a long time for transportation and no contract or anything formal would make me really nervous. Both are hard nos for me. I’d definitely try to stick with the bakery or find someone that would at the very least have a contract.

Pop into the bakery, and discuss it with her face to face. Hard to avoid someone when they are standing in front of you. Just tell her you are concerned with the lack of communication, and see how she reacts. That said, professional bakers know how to transport safely, so if your next best option is a bit of a drive, they should know what they are doing!

I would definitely go with a professional bakery and one that has a contract.

I would prefer to go with someone who requires a deposit and contract (or some type of invoice confirming the service agreement and date/time of delivery)!!

I'd just want the written confirmation for your own peace of mind!

There is nothing wrong with using a licensed at-home baker if you prefer them over a fancy bakery or grocery store. Just get everything in writing and ask for their policies in writing that you both agree to.
