Cake Topper

Sarah, on July 27, 2018 at 1:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

This probably seems like a small issue, and I am not sure what category to put it in, but I want to get advice. My FMIL bought us a cake topper that I don't like - they are bears dressed in wedding attire lol. Our cake is 3 tiered white white frosting (no frills) and will have flowers. I thought a simple "Mr and Mrs" cake topper would look good. It doesn't really go with our "theme," but we do call each other "Bear" and a lot of people know that and think it is cute/funny.

She hasn't really been very involved because they live two hours away, so I feel bad not using it, and I also know it was kind of expensive ($60) . I'm wondering...do I go ahead and use the cake topper even though I had something else in mind?

Honestly, I would. It's a small thing, it's not awful, and it helps to cement your relationship with your future in-laws.

Can you get another small cake and put the bear on that one? or use as decoration somewhere else? you should put what you want on your cake!

Are you planning on having a rehearsal dinner or bridal shower? If so maybe you can get a small cake and use her cake topper for the wedding rehearsal or bridal shower. That way you can utilize the cake topper she bought but still have the one that you want on your actual wedding day.

Use the topper on a groom's cake. The cake can be served either at the rehearsal or the wedding.

Yes I am! I was thinking I would do that or the other way around and use the one I want on the rehearsal dinner cake.

I am thinking that as well Smiley smile It is kind of silly, but not a big deal.

Use it as decoration on the grooms cake. Smiley smile It would definitely fit that cake (if you're doing one) better than a simple, elegant wedding cake. A more simple topper for yours seems like the better option. That's the route we're going as well and I plan on ordering a custom one from Etsy.

While that is a very sweet gesture, I would not put it on my pretty cake. Do as the others suggested. Grooms cake, rehearsal dinner, etc.

When I got married my aunt also bought me a cake topper that I didn't like (she didn't tell me she was doing it which was kind of annoying) but I think she did it in a like "I'm her aunt, I'll buy their cake topper because that's a special thing to do for them" kind of way so I used it. 5 years later I don't even think about my cake topper and only look at pictures of my cake when I'm scrolling through the file of our wedding photos looking for other photos.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that I would use it because it would be nice for your aunt and I really don't think it that's important of a wedding memory to hurt feelings over.

I completely agree. My FMIL sent me a picture and I told her it was cute, not realizing she was going to buy it. But you're right, I don't think it's a huge deal in the scheme of things!

You could do both on the top depending on the size of the bears and the "Mr and Mrs" sign. You could also do the sign on the top with the bears on a different tier or at the base. I also like the grooms cake suggestion, but I think you should use it on the wedding day, not for your rehearsal.

Agreed; I think it would still sting a bit if we didn't use it for the wedding.

Could you have a groom's cake with that topper on it? or a large cupcake? Then you can have the cake you wanted, and another fun one.

I think using it on the grooms cake is a great idea! You can still put it on display for people to see so you FMIL isn't hurt by you not using it at all. It was sweet of her to buy that for you Smiley smile

Unfortunately we aren't doing a groom's cake! I think I am going to use it, and then just use the other one for the rehearsal dinner cake. I agree it was super sweet, and I don't want to risk hurting her feelings/wasting her money over something that I probably won't care about on the big day.

What about using it for the groomsman cake topper [and have the grooms cake at the wedding]. That cake topper tends to be more personal and less formal, so I think it would be perfect. Use the more formal cake topper you wanted on your wedding cake

I would use the topper you want on the top of your Cale and then maybe displaye the one that she got you somewhere at your wedding. Maybe on the table near the cake or by your guest book. That way it’s there and she will see that you used it, you still get what you want, and it doesn’t steal the show or ruin your look!
