Cake Tastings - How do they work?

Stephanie, on March 9, 2014 at 9:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I have mine coming up in a few weeks. Of course, I can call my vendor and ask how they do there's. But the recent yummy pictures Nay posted of cake and icing made me wonder -

How did your baker run the tasting? Do you let them know what flavors you want to try ahead of time? Do they have certain flavors available and that's it? A mix of two? Do you get to take home leftover cake? Do they have milk? lol JK

We're using The Master's Baker in West Chester b/c it comes with our venue price as an FYI

I was in contact with my baker leading up to the meeting so she has an idea of what I wanted. She did ask us what four flavors we wanted to try at our tasting. We were able to bring the left overs home. We flipped through her books, discussed what we wanted, how many guests, decor, icing, etc. They offered us coffee and water.

They brought out the most popular cake, frosting, and filling options, and i requested one or two others. all the frostings and fillings were in little cups, so you could mix and match with the different cakes. if you have something specific in mind, definitely call and make sure they have it available

I have been to a couple. The ones around here allow you to pick several flavor combinations ahead of time and/or they can give you some or all, whichever you choose, and they bake mini cakes for you to try. And you definitely can take it home. We had so much cake from yesterdays tasting (and I only requested 5 flavor combinations!) that we ended up just throwing some out!

I actually used the Master's Baker as well! They are FANTASTIC!

For our tasting we went in and talked about how big we needed the cake to be and what we wanted it to look like first. Then we got to taste - I think we got to try at least five flavors they had pre-prepared and then they gave us two pretty big sized "tasting cakes" to take home with us (and we got to pick those flavors) so you could try something else! We wound up going with: choc cream, almond, carrot spice, and confetti for our actual cake. Almond was the hands down favorite.

PS - totally just stalked you. We used Robert Ryan as well, except we were at The Barn on Bridge and not Columbia Station!

Most places I went had a variety of cakes/icings/fillings to taste set up. I'd imagine they bake a few cakes in the morning, then give them out as samples all day. If you already know what you want, I'd bet you could call ahead and say, "i'd like to sample.....". One place I went just handed over a box of tiny samples. Not the best cake, but I sure liked getting to take it home!

When we got there, they just asked which kinds we wanted to try. Then she brought out a plate with the icings & cupcakes. Since I had 5 people there for my cake tasting, there weren't any leftovers, but we bought a dozen cupcakes to take home Smiley smile

Mine asked me to pick 2 flavors I was interested in before my appointment and she made both in cupcakes, so I got one and FH got one of each flavor. They were delicious and so hard to pick one for our cake!
