Cake tasting

So I just heard from my baker for our upcoming June wedding she’s not doing in person tastings. She will mail us her top 6 flavors. We are doing cupcakes along with our small cutting cake. I’m kind of put off by not be able to taste the flavors I really wanted and not being able to talk in person...

What do you all think. Should I search for a new baker?

I have a friend with a small mail order cake business - she ships all over the country and the cakes arrive delicious. The last one I ordered was delayed two days by the post office and it was still amazingly fresh. Bakeries that ship have whole processes they develop to ship cakes safely.

I would look for other bakers. I’m sure it’s because of Covid I’m not sure if any of them would do at home tasting or something check around. If it’s costing you money and doesn’t come with the package of the venue you want to be happy with the flavors.

    Best of luck Smiley heart

To go cake tasting boxes are pretty common right now. My fiancé and I did ours last month and we loved the experience being just the two of us. Our baker gave us a list of all the sponges, icings and fillings and told us to select 4-6 of each and they put together a box for us of 6 sponges, 5 icings, 6 fillings and we did many combos with each until we found our magic cake. It was great. And much more comfortable in the comforts of our home. We were told to send in picture inspiration in the meantime and 30 days before the wedding send our final cake design look and flavors. Cake tasting 1

I hope the cakes aren’t days old. Ours was made that day so they were fresh when we picked up our box. It was definitely a different experience but we had fun mix and matching our different flavors to the different sponges and creating our cake.

A tasting should always be done before you book the baker to make sure you get the right one. That is actually standard practice. What do you do if the baker contract is signed and you don't like the cake at the tasting afterwards? Then you are stuck or eat the deposit and start over with tastings before you book someone else.

But being able to choose cakes and fillings for tasting is a great idea. I've seen online where many are offering the tasting boces to be picked up in person but they preselect the options and you don't get to pick.

I picked up the cake samples and took them home. Why is the baker mailing the samples? Why can't you pick them up?

Mailable cake tells me the ingredients probably exclude the types of things I like in a cake, such as fresh fruit or whipped cream

I agree that the tastings should be done before booking. I have an all inclusive so my baker wasn’t a choice but we absolutely love them and their cakes and their sweets at their bakery.
The preselected options also sucks and the couple should have a choice of everything offered. My fiancé and I had a giant list of different sponges, icings, and fillings and we got to choose 4-6 of each to have go into our to go boxes and each was labeled for us. I definitely don’t think baker’s should take the right for a couple to choose a cake for themselves away from them. Hopefully everyone getting a Togo box can get a similar if not better experience to the one I had with my pick up cake box.
