Cake Tasting? What to Expect?

A., on January 25, 2018 at 3:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
Hi all! Our cake tasting is coming up soon and I was wondering if it’s just sitting down sampling cakes, or if there’s more to it? Not sure what to expect. Did you guys put a deposit down the day of your tasting, or do they let you sleep on it and let you put deposit down later on down the road? Thanks!

My DH and I did 4 cake tastings. In addition to actually tasting the cake, we talked through our design and then got a price quote for what we wanted. In the end, we chose the bakery with the cake that we both liked, made sure we could afford it, then did the deposit/contract.

It varies a little between bakeries. No, we were not required to put down a deposit at the tasting. We were able to leave each cake tasting appointment with the idea that we'd be in touch.

One baker met us at our venue and we sat and talked about design ideas (I showed her some causes I had saved on Pinterest, she showed me pictures of cakes, then she sketched the ideal cake based on what I said I liked). She had prepared a variety of sample cakes (each layered together with two fillings per sample cake and the top was frosted in buttercream), and then we tasted as she told us about the flavors in each one. We talked about what flavor combos we liked from the samples, asked any additional questions we had, and that was the end.

The other two bakeries we visited in-shop. They were less personal. We walked in, were shown to a table, and were handed binders full of pictures of cakes they've made. We were left alone to go through the pictures. Then someone dropped off the cake samples. At one bakery, they had cubes of various cake flavors served along side little cups of possible fillings and possible frostings. At the other, we were served big cupcakes frosted with buttercream and little cups of fillings. We were left alone to taste. We were asked at one of them after that if there were any other fillings we wanted to sample, so we did request to trybone more filling. Then, someone came out to talk with us about pricing, design, what we liked from the tasting, etc, and we were sent on our way.

Finding a baker for the cake was my last vendor I needed to book. I contacted one of the vendors from my venue's preferred vendor list and knew that if their cakes were good, we were just going to book them. I got tired of reaching out to vendors and scheduling appointments lol.

We just sampled some cakes that we decided on ahead of time. I don't think there was really anymore to the actual tasting. We booked our baker the same day as our tasting. I didn't have a design in mind at that point, but I just sent that after the appointment.

Go to more than one cake tasting so you can get a variety of quotes, flavors, design ideas, etc. We waited a week before putting a deposit down. Don't let them pressure you into putting a deposit down before you're 100% sure its the bakery you want to go with.

This is what we are looking at price wise for what we want

    Price Quote: $520.03

    Ø Deposit: $75

    Ø Payment 1: 222.51 | due: 9.6.2018

    Ø Payment 1: 222.51 | due: 9.22.2018

    5 Tier 4”

    Vanilla and Chocolate Naked Cake

Chocolate Mouse and Pastry Cream Fillings

White Chocolate Butter Cream and Butter Cream for layering

    Fresh Flowers

    Wood Cake Stand

    Delivery

    Set up

    hope this helps

When we went to ours, we sat down ate the cakes and the bakers explained each of them to us. They also asked for our ideas (great idea if you can bring pics) and gave us different prices.

I live in nyc and a couple of Bakeries wanted to charge for cake tasing a fee of 50-75 dollars just to taste a couple of favors and talk about design and the consultation would be 30 mins and i just figure that it would be best to just buy a slice of cake that cost 2.50 and taste it and than ask the bakers about price and design I got my cake from a bakery that I trust and like it was recommend by a close friend of mine and she’s really pick about food so I got my daughter bday cake from there and it was a big hit and I’m getting my wedding cake made there to 3 tier with design and flowers it serves 100 people for 450

I just had one cake tasting. They allowed us to choose four combinations. We ate them and then went home. They told us we didn’t have to place the order for some time. We were five months out.
