Etsy has a bunch of options for wooden cake stands. I have attached one like I am imagining you are looking for. A lot of the photos show the cake sitting on a decorative plate in order to keep the cake clean.

You could also get a wood stand and make sure you have something over it like a doillie or cloth or some sort that the cake goes over.

    Hey there Heather!!

Are you planning on making the wood cake stand yourself or would you be buying it? If you are buying one that is specifically made for serving food, it should definitely be treated already and be safe for food. Etsy would be a great place to start your search, but you could also look into any big kitchenware or homeware stores in your area.

Generally, the baker will have a foil covered cardboard piece under the cake that goes on top of the stand. The cake itself never touches the cake stand, even the metal ones.
