Cake Flavors & Filling/Frosting Options - I Can't Decide!

datestobates, on February 23, 2017 at 11:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Hello WW people!

FH and I have our menu & cake tasting on Tuesday and I cannot decide on what cake combos to try. FH said they all sound good, except he thinks we shouldn't do vanilla because it's "boring". My brain is fried from work and I could really use your suggestions on what we should try!

I copied and pasted the options from the email I received from our bakery. The fillings and frosting are commingled & I have no other information, like if the frostings can be any color or anything like that. We can try 4 different combinations from the following options...

Cake Flavors:

- Vanilla Sponge

- Chocolate

- Red Velvet

- Lemon

- Orange Almond

Filling/Frosting

- Buttercream

- Cream Cheese Buttercream

- Strawberry/Raspberry Compote

- Ganache

- Fondant

- Lemon Curd

- Mousse

I attached a picture of the look we're going for. I just want it to be delicious as well as pretty! Thank you all for your input!!

I would say no to the orange almond, because I know a lot of people with nut allergies. Also no to the red velvet, because who needs all that red food coloring? We had a fondant covered cake and I pulled it off, to eat it; it seems like a waste of money. My sister had a buttercream frosted cake that was a smooth as fondant.

Other than that, I can't narrow it down. I'd want it all!

I'd go with orange almond with compote filling and vanilla with cream cheese.

We are getting almond with raspberry (to die for at our bakery) and vanilla with champagne filling. Also going with buttercream, because fh doesn't care for fondant. I love the look of your inspiration though! The gold is so fun!

Buttercream frosted cakes are so tasty and a good bakery should be able to achieve a lot of different looks with it. I'd definitely want to taste the buttercream and/or cream cheese buttercream.

We ended up choosing two cake flavors and alternating which one was in which tier so our guests would have a choice. We're pretty excited about the one flavor combo we went with, which is a lemon pound cake with raspberry marmalade and white chocolate mousse fillings. I'd highly recommend that you consider the lemon cake, strawberry/raspberry compote, and mousse with a little buttercream frosting.

We went with a more simple marble cake with a double helping of white chocolate mousse filling for our other flavor to appeal to our guests who would prefer a little chocolate and no fruity flavors. As much as I love a good red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, I think the chocolate cake would be a bigger crowd pleaser with any of those fillings.

Orange almond with either the mousse or the cream cheese buttercream.

Or vanilla sponge with the strawberry/raspberry compote or mousse.

I'm a former cake decorator and both choices will match your elegant cake and be a splendid taste to the palette.

Vanilla is not boring. It's classic. But with the right "pop" it can be fantastic

Definitely try vanilla sponge and chocolate, because what they do with the simpler, most classic flavors will let you know what kind of bakers they really are. I'd also try their buttercream and cream cheese buttercream, because one of those will likely end up on the outside of your cake and you want to know it's quality. I'd try lemon with raspberry as well, since that's a really popular combo.

Fondant is pretty but gross. I always have to scrape it off.

Yes yes yes to cream cheese buttercream, that sounds delicious.

I'm keeping mine simple with a marble cake. It looks cool and everyone likes vanilla or chocolate (sometimes)

But personally I love lemon cake! Yum

I have yet to meet anyone that likes eating fondant. Our cake is going to be frosted with buttercream.

We're actually going with three flavors -- with four tiers our baker is able to make almost equal amounts of servings for each flavor at no additional cost (chocolate cake with raspberry buttercream filling, banana nut cake with turtle filling and cookie dough cake with oreo filling).

Our cake maker said that fondant keeps the cake better while sitting out at the venue for hours. Not sure if that's true or not but I thought it was an interesting point.

We had our cake tasting last week too! We went with red velvet (FHs favorite) for two tiers, and chocolate mouse for the other tier, both with standard buttercream frosting. So tasty!

I would stay away from the orange almond. Also, buttercream tastes a lot better than fondant so it's a question of looks versus taste. I would rather have a super tasty cake that wasn't perfect looking. Plus, a lot of cake decorators can get buttercream really smooth to where you can't even tell it's not fondant. In my opinion I would taste:

    red velvet w/ cream cheese

    vanilla w/ strawberry compote

vanilla w/ cream cheese (i think it's better than vanilla with just buttercream)

    lemon w/ cream cheese

I think chocolate (unless you love love love chocolate) is kind of boring and should be saved for the Groom's cake if you're having one because I've noticed that most people would choose vanilla cake or something lighter at weddings instead of chocolate.

Hope this helps a little Smiley smile
