Cake dilemma

Lynne, on August 6, 2019 at 8:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 13
My mom suggested that I make my cake instead of having one made. She said it would save finances and I would be able to make the cake just the way we want it and because everyone loves my buttercream frosting.

I told her that I cannot and will not do cake stuff on the day before my wedding. She then said to make the cake and decorate it the day before then tell someone how to assemble it.

I was originally thinking of have a cake and then cupcakes.

I’m a chef and baking is in my blood. I literally bake from scratch every couple of days and I’m very comfortable in a kitchen. There is no way on this green earth I would ever attempt to make and deliver my own wedding cake. It’s a high stress situation to make a tiered wedding cake.

A SMALL cutting cake and cupcakes might be doable if you have the extra hands to box them up so they don’t bump and look messy.

That's how I feel. I do have an aunt that is a cake decorator. I have asked her before if she would be willing to make the cake and cupcakes but she hasn't answered yet.

That would be your best bet unless you have a lot of volunteers in your wedding to help you bake and package.
You also have options from bakeries. Order a simple frosted cake and decorate it yourself. You can use fresh, silk or even gumpaste flowers for a clean wedding look or something whimsical like edible paper butterflies. It’s not the cake that’s expensive, it’s the ornate designs. If you just want a basic flavor sponge with buttercream it shouldn’t be a $$$ cake.

I would go to Sam's club (or similar in your area) and have a cake priced out..I wouldn't do it myself for sure on my wedding day.

You are smart not to take on that the day before your wedding. That would be super stressful. My mom made my sons cake and she was so nervous all day and it took a lot of the joy out of the time we spent together that day.

I agree, you're making a great choice to not bake your own cake! What cake/cupcake flavors are you leaning toward?

Assembling a cake can be very tricky. As badly as I want to incorporate my own baking into my wedding, there is simply no way I'm making a cake. Don't do it

My FH is baking our cake but we’re having his work deliver and assemble it lol you could do like a small cake and then some cupcakes and have your MOH or someone put the cupcakes on a stand.

I baked, decorated, and assembled (3tier) our cake for our first wedding. When we decided to renew our vows, I told DH that there is no way I'm putting myself through that again. I spent the entire morning of putting this cake together, then my MOH said she would take it to the reception. Well, July in the back of an suv is not a great way to deliver a cake when their ac goes out. Needless to say, it got hot in the back and my cake melted. And slid sideways as they were carrying it to the table. It was a mess. I would recommend that you not do it yourself, find someone else to do it for you.

I wouldn’t do it this one day. You should be able to enjoy your wedding day without the stress of having to make your cake and deliver it. We got a cake with cupcakes from Publix. It may have been cheaper for us to make it ourselves but if we drop it or it get knocked around it on us.

I completely understand what you are saying. I don't want to be doing anything the day before my wedding. So here's what I think. If finances are a problem, you may want to consider her idea. If it is not, and you want someone else to do your cake, then that's your prerogative as the bride. I've learned not to rule out any suggestions but that's just what they are...suggestions. Talk it over with your FH and you all decide together. Congrats and stress-free planning ahead! LBVS

My mom suggested we do the cake ourselves, we both love baking and could do it) I then told her no way. We want a single tier and cupcakes. While simple I reminded her that one, the cake has to be gluten free(FH is gluten intolerant) cupcakes do not. Two we then have to transport them(wedding isn't local). She then agreed on having them made. While I could make a gluten free cake, it would require a lot of trial runs. I really don't have that kind of time( between work and 2 kids). We are also paying for the wedding ourselves so we are ok with the extra cost.
