Do you cut the cake before the dances or after?

After. Usually the cake cutting is the signal to older guests that it is okay to leave. We will be cutting the cake at the top of our final hour.

I've only seen it after the dances. We are having free dancing after all the big stuff.

I had this dilemma as well. Normally cake cutting signifies the end or near the end of the party. But as others have noted this is cue for the elder folks to leave. My wedding planner suggested we do the cake cutting right after dinner before dancing. I also had to factor in I didn't hire my photographer for the entire night as I thought it unnecessary.

Every wedding I have been to, they do it right after the Bridal party entrance before the dances. Maybe it depends on the venue and where they display it? At the last wedding I went to, they had to move it off the dance floor so that's why they did it first I think.

Depends. I've seen it done during dinner so the cake can be whisked to the back and cut and served after dinner. While the guests are eating the cake, the first dances have started, so once the guests finish their cake, they get on the dance floor and don't have to go back to their seats for cake.

Most weddings I've been to have had coffee/dessert bars later in the evening and that's the signal that the night is wrapping up in an hour or so.

The wedding I just went to they did the cake cutting before the first dance I think. First dance, father daughter dance, and then I think they opened the floor to everyone

My DJ requested to have it done immediately after dinner so that the energy doesn't die down once he gets people up and moving. That being said, I haven't decided if we'll be going with his request after reading that it signals the OK for people to leave if they want to.

We did our's later in the ceremony. I think it went first dance, father/daughter dance, speeches, dinner, some dancing then cake cutting, then more dancing.

We are cutting our cake after dinner then doing father daughter dance, mother son dance. Our first dance is being done right after our entrance

We live in the northeast, where it's common to have dancing through out the night; open dancing between served courses. After our entrée course was eaten, we cut the cake, so it could be served on the dessert bar.
