Cake Crisis

AEW, on August 9, 2019 at 12:59 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 22

Hi Hi

I know I still have some time (but not really) to get our cake but I'm really having a hard time finding someone who can do it. We just need a small 6-8 inch cake to take pictures with and cut. The caterer is providing us with some mini local desserts called tarts so that will cover the guests. The biggest issue I'm encountering is that there have been a lot of people that have relocated since the hurricanes of 2017 so the usual places that people know about are possibly closed.

I've asked several of my friends and family members to put their ears to the ground for me until I can get back home but that won't be until November and with our wedding at the end of it that doesn't give me any real time to find something.

*Sigh*

Sam's or Walmart could be an option if you just need a small cake for cutting. They're actually pretty tasty too.

Publix has great cakes if you’re not opposed to a grocery store!

Oh ladies, thanks but I forgot to mention that our wedding will be back in St. Thomas, VI. We don't have a Sam's or Publix there.

But even if we did, FH is not a fan of the grocery cakes unfortunately.

If it’s a destination wedding, I would speak with your contact there for more recommendations or guidance.

If your venue allows it I’d just make it myself, a tiny cake to cut isn’t any more difficult than a birthday cake. You can buy fancy gumpaste flowers to decorate it with of fresh ones from your florist. You would only need a cake leveler(can buy at craft stores in baking section) and then normal birthday cake making supplies.
Just a last minute option if you can’t find a baker in time.

I love what the PpS suggested for grocery store cakes. You can always buy a plain white one and decorate with flowers or whatever nicely

Our wedding planner recommended Island Sweet Stuff and VI Desserts when we were planning. I'm not sure if you've already contacted them or not. We ultimately decided not to get a cake, but both of those places had websites and facebook pages so if you haven't tried them, you can contact them now to see if they can do what you are wanting.

Have you tried WW's vendor search? I just entered your location into WW's vendor search, and came up with three bakeries in that area: Queen of Tarts, Suga Mama's Bakers, and Heavenly Bites.

I've checked out the vendor search here and noticed that it's not exactly up to date. The venue we had already booked before the hurricanes in 2017 is still listed and they haven't been open since the storms.

I've personally had cake/cupcakes from Heavenly Bites and they're okay to me, a bit overpriced. As for the other 2, I'll have to see if my mom or someone at home can check them out for me. Otherwise, I'll have to wait til November and that will be too late.

    *Double Sigh*

VI Desserts was our original baker and she's not doing cakes. Since the storms, I'm not sure if Holly is even on island still. Super bummed out about it 2 years later because her cakes are AMAZING and beautiful and she was lovely to work with.

If you only need a small cake for cutting, what about a homemade cake?

I'll keep that in mind as an absolute last last last resort. I come from a family of bakers but because of the wedding date, I seriously doubt anyone (including and especially myself) will have the time to crack open the oven.

    Update:

FH and I were able to take a look at Suga Mama's so we put in a request. Hopefully we'll be able to figure something out and she offers tastings. There's a 2 week window for completing orders so I may actually have time to squeeze a tasting in with my mom before the big day. The 2 week window will also give us a chance to change our flavors if we need to hopefully.

    Crossing fingers and toes . . .
