Cake and Punch Reception Menu

Seshanna, on February 9, 2018 at 11:50 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

What to feed guests is always a hot topic around here, isn't it? I was talking to Nanny (my FH's 85 year old grandma) and she was telling us how most of her life, unless you were rich, cake and punch receptions were the norm. The church ladies would arrange to have lots of coffee, sweet tea, and punch with your cake, and sometimes they'd bring in fruit salad or little tea sandwiches. Since our wedding's not at a meal time, she said that same sort of reception would be a good fit, especially since our WC said we should expect about 65 guests to come. We're having the reception after lunch and expecting it to be over before dinner, and just something quiet and relaxed for everyone.

We agreed that the cake and punch chill-type of reception was much more our vibe, and so she asked what we would be wanting to serve. Cake, of course, and we've been planning to spring for a candy bar for Halloween since day one, and the cookie table we've been planning on. I told her fruit would be good, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank. We've got drinks figured and budgeted, but other than pastries, sweets, and fruit, I'm not sure what else to offer at a cake and punch party.

You could do other desserts as well. I would have the cake and other varied desserts on a table for guests to choose.

You need some savory items. Everything you’ve listed is very sweet.

Have you gone to a fancy tea? You can copy those ideas. Tiny rolled sandwiches etc.

I would say maybe a cheese spread/veggies/dips? Just so it’s not all sweets.

You can add things like a crudite plate or cheese and crackers for some lighter more savory items or other chip and dip type things. Not sure if you want any heavier apps, but something like Swedish meatballs or kielbasa might be good.

I would do a veggie platter with dips, cheese/meat platter, tea sandwiches, etc. to have something savory. I think you still need to offer light apps even if it is a "cake and punch" reception at a non-meal time.

I agree you would need something savory to balance out the sweet. I personally can go to town on a meat/cheese/cracker display so that would be my vote.

Smiley xd Thank you. Yes, I definitely need something non-sugary, and Nanny was suggesting we order platters from the deli she goes to and likes. I've just been drawing a total blank about what to ask him to make or order for us. Think those little pinwheel wrap sandwiches are a good add, or is that more of a meal (after I figure out the rest of the spread for savory goodies)?

We are doing chicken salad sandwiches on French bread, chips and veggie trays. Cookies and milk as dessert instead of cake. Sort of a light lunch since our wedding is at 2:30 and the reception will be over by 5. Not very fancy or anything, we just wanted something light to serve!

I think that would be great! They are usually sliced pretty small so you will be able to eat it in a few bites.

A cake and punch reception is perfectly acceptable if you are hosting at a non-meal time (which it sounds like you are). Are you expecting a lot of OOT guests though? Often, nowadays, as more guests are traveling for a wedding it is expected that you will provide a meal. In your Nanny's time, most weddings were quite small and the majority of guests were local. Just something to consider.

For a cake and punch reception, I'd try and offer a few simple savory items in addition to the sweets you mentioned above. How about a cheese and cracker platter, a veggie and hummus tray and if you can afford it a few kinds of sandwiches.

That's a very good point, Hedgie! My guest list is entirely OOT, but I'm only really expecting 5-10 of them to show (and I plan to spoil them as much as I can that weekend). All of my FH's guests are his family and they're all local - the furthest anyone's having to drive for him is half an hour. This has all been pretty helpful for me to ask the guy who runs the shop for some things to make for us! So aside from cake, pastries, and candy, I've got: enough pinwheel sandwiches for everyone to have at least two, meatballs, a few pounds of different kinds of sliced cheeses, a few trays of mixed veggies and dip, crackers, buffalo chicken dip (it's so gooooood!!), mini hoagie rolls or mini buns, and see if he can get some of those mozzarella-prosciutto rolls.

Some savory items that would go well with a "cake and punch" reception are: quiche, blintzes, savory croissants, crostini, and flat bread pizza.

It would be nice to offer little sandwiches or other finger food (meatballs, cheeses, sliders, ect) so it's not just a sugar rush. I like cake and punch receptions, they're always much more relaxed!

I’d love that...so long as I wasn’t traveling or anything. But, I’m all about desserts so don’t mind that a bit!
