By consumption vs. flat rate for alcohol

I just wanted to get outside opinions, I have to make up my mind in 3 days! I have 48 guests (including us and our children), we can do our bar by consumption which would be 5/beer 5/wine and 9/mixed drink. Or a flat rate of $55 per person. Thoughts? Experiences? Thank you!

I would do consumption at that rate. Each person would need to drink 11 beer/wine to match that... or 6 mixed drinks.

Does that sound like the quantity your guests would drink?

Does the $9 include tax and service fee? Our drinks are also $9 a piece but after all the charges it comes to $12 per drink and $7 per beer. Even sodas are $4. My venue does not offer a bar package. Only consumption. I would definitely have chosen an hourly package if I could have. We'll have $5,000 towards the open bar, 96 bottles of wine ($2,300 corkage fee) 3 signature cocktails that are charged per batch (50 servings per batch. $700 per batch). I would just take into account how much your guests drink and just see what seems to be a better deal. In our case consumption is costing over $8,000. I don't see how that's cheaper.

Oh- we have about 120 adults and they all drink.

I'm leaning toward consumption, it's difficult to evaluate my guests they are all over the map. I think to limit the mixed drinks I'm only having two signature drinks as options. But as someone said above, I'm worried I'll be doing accounting all night!

I don't know what happened to my comment but it didn't post! So annoying! My guests are all over the map which is hard to predict. I am worried, like another poster stated above, that I'll be calculating all night.

@Naomi - all we did was set a realistic limit for our bar. We then instructed the venue that if we reached the limit, that we would extend and we would continue to pay.

I have no idea how much people drank, but because we weren't notified we didn't go above our limit.

No need to think about it during the wedding at all!

I did consumption and we had 55 including us and our 4 kids. There were 9 kids total. I'm soooo glad I did consumption because so many people just drank tea/soda/water ever though H and I kept suggesting they order alcohol. Our bar bill was a little over $300 for the whole night.
