Buying your dress - when to start looking?

Brianna, on June 19, 2021 at 12:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19
Hello everybody,

I’m getting married 7/10/22. We booked our venues so now I’m thinking dresses. I was wondering when should you start looking and make a decision? I have over a year and I was wondering is it too early or does it really matter?

I think now would be a great time to start looking at dresses and trying some on! It's not too early at all. It usually takes 4-8 months for the dress to ship (depending on the designer and whether the dress is custom or not), and you typically want to leave 2-3 months for alterations, so it's certainly not too early. You also still have plenty of time, so you don't need to rush into a decision, which is always nice! For a July wedding, you probably want to purchase your dress by like December at the latest (if it's one that you have to order instead of buying off the rack), but anytime between now and then is ideal!

You can definitely start now! It does take a few months to get your dress after ordering it and then you need some time for alterations. You’ll feel less stressed and will have more options if you start early.

Definitely not too early! I’m getting married on 10/2/21. I picked out/ordered my dress on 10/10/20, and it got here at the very end of March.

Now is great! I’m getting married 7/31/21. Ordered my dress 7/29/20 it arrived at the end of February and they stored it until my alterations which started end of May. There’s a little time in there in the event of a delay or mistake. Enjoy!

My wedding is on 08/25/22 and I have my first dress appointment in late July. I plan to take my time and make a purchase by October to allow for 6-8 months of production plus 3 months of alterations.

    Hi there!

I don't think it is too early to start looking! I purchased my dress this past January for my October 2, 2021 wedding. I think as long as you know your budget, know what you have in mind, and know you won't change your mind, start looking now Smiley smile

    Goodluck

I'm getting married in Sept 2022 and I had one appointment to try on different styles to figure out what I like, but have scheduled a couple appointments in July at other places now that I know what works for me and hopefully will be purchasing one then.

I’m getting married July 21st 2022 and I start shopping next week! I feel the sooner you buy the dress the better. Gives time for it to come in and do alterations!

I think you can start looking now. You don’t want to wait too long. I haven’t found a dress yet. Does anyone know a good bridal shop near Miami FL?

I bought mine online from Lulu's. I bought 4 dresses to try on and I immediately fell in love with one of them. My dress ended up costing less than $200, and my alterations also came out to under $200. So all in, I got a gorgeous dress I love for less than $500! Some people like the pricey boutique route, but I found that I could get something perfect for me for cheap, so I can spend more money on other parts of my day Smiley smile

My wedding is in 6/2022 and I've already found my dress. I think the more you do early on its the less you have to worry about when it gets closer.

It really depends on where you buy the dress from, the designer’s lead time, and your budget. I initially wanted to buy my dress from Pantora Bridal because I love their dresses, but when inquiring found out they need 7-14 months in advance of your event date. I was 7 months out from my date when I started looking so I didn’t think that was enough time. I ended up getting my dress from a local bridal boutique and the designer I chose was able to rush the shipping of my dress at no additional charge. It took roughly 4 months to come in and I start alterations next week. Most bridal shops also have a sample rack of dresses you can buy from at a discounted price as an option if you’re in a time crunch. I say that to say you’re not too early to start. I’d recommended visiting a local bridal boutique to try different styles of dresses (mermaid, a line, ballroom, etc.) within your budget and narrow down your style first and designer second. Knowing your style will help tremendously when you start shopping. The experience I had at my bridal shop was phenomenal as I walked in clueless to the different styles of wedding dresses, designers, etc. and was able to narrow down my style after the first visit. I found a variety of styles within my budget which I loved. Dresses can really get up there in price. I was blown away buy how much some designer’s dresses cost. For example, I also loved Ese Azenabor but her dresses average close to $10k in cost which was out of my budget. Have a wonderful time searching for your wedding dress. You’ll know when you know Smiley heart

I started looking a year in advance of our wedding day. I happened to find one on my first appointment. But I know for many brides it kay take longer. It just came in a couple weeks ago and took about 6 months, they start alterations about 2 months out. But I have had plenty of time to plan my veil, hair/makeup looks etc. and its helped with the overall vision of the day. I would say now or in July would be a great time to start looking!
