I live and am getting married in Westchester County, NY (near NYC) but am from Orlando, FL where my parents still reside. We decided not to do the wedding in FL because most of my extended family is in NJ and all of my FH's family & friends are in NY. I am considering purchasing my wedding gown in Orlando so that I can easily go with my mother (and thinking will be cheaper than in NY) and having it shipped back to NY for alterations. Is this insane? Should I just fly my mom up to NY for dress shopping and eat the cost?

Hello, fellow Orlando bride here! Our wedding is in Las Vegas. I did all the dress activities in my local city - Mom flew here to go dress shopping, alterations, etc. I'll be carrying the dress onto the plane as my carry on. Here are some videos I found helpful for traveling with a dress.

I did this! I bought my dress in CT which is where I am from and where my family lives, and had it shipped to NC. It worked out well because I didn't have to pay sales tax since it was getting shipped out of state. I only had to pay to get it shipped which cost less than tax would have!

I have another idea: Buy your dress in the Tri-State area, FaceTime your mom to your appointment, and have it shipped to one of your relatives in NJ. You won't have to schlep back and forth to Florida for alterations; you'll have the wider variety of bridal boutiques that comes with being near a fashion capital; and by shipping (if not also buying) the dress to NJ, you won't have to pay sales tax.

I live in Maryland and got my dress in Oklahoma, so my family could be there. The dress shop shipped to me and I got local alterations without any issues.

You can purchase the dresss in NY, and have it shipped to a trusted relative's address in NJ to save on the shipping cost.

Thats what I just did. I went dress shopping in wisconsin where my mom lives, and am getting it shipped to alabama. They even waived my shipping fee which is a plus!

I live in PA but I'm from NY. I bought my dress in NY with my family/friends and had it shipped to PA no problem. I just went to a seamstress local to me for alterations. The salon charged $25 to ship but I did not have to pay state tax since it was out of state so that saved me a couple hundred dollars which was a huge bonus!

My wedding was in St. Louis, i currently reside in Chicago, and my parents reside in West Palm Beach, FL where I used to. I ended up just getting my dress in St. Louis as it was in the same city as I was marrying in. It would have been much easier to just do it where my mom was, but oh well. I think the way you want to do it is totally fine!
