Buying it premade or making it yourself?

Bo Miller, on July 27, 2020 at 2:47 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 25

I am sitting and looking at invites, and signs, and WP gifts and all of that and I was wondering if it would be cheaper just to buy a Cricut and make the things myself as opposed to buying them. Has anyone went this route? (I am pretty crafty person so that isn't a concern)

I'm such a DIY bride, so I relate to this! I'm not even DIY for financial sake, but more so because I'm extremely picky and nothing is perfect to me unless I do it, lol. I pick everything apart, so it's easiest if I do everything myself so that I won't have to do that. DIYing can be cheaper than buying pre-made, but it isn't in all cases. I've done some things that costed 3x what they would've pre-made, so I'd say it's generally more cost-effective, but definitely be prepared for the few times where it won't be. It is also extremely time-consuming, but you're crafty so you'll find a way to get it done 😊 For signs and what not, Walmart sells some wood signs and what not for really cheap by their craft section. Good thing about a Cricut is that your money wouldn't go to waste because you'd probably reuse it a ton. I'd go with my gut on this one. If you think it's a smart move for the items you want, go for it! Wishing you the best of luck 🤩

Thank you! I am the same way so I keep looking at things and thinking they are cute, but now quite right with what I want. I think I am going to end up getting a Cricut so I can just make it myself. I feel I would be happier with the results! Thanks for the suggestion for signs at Walmart I wouldn't have thought of that!

To me it was worth it to buy the stuff premade. Cricuts are expensive and I would have spent more on materials and time than just ordering stuff. I wouldn’t be using a cricut beyond my wedding so it wouldn’t have been worth it.

We're DIYing most of our wedding with the exception of a couple decor things and the attire and jewelry. It's not often cheaper and it's time consuming. But I preferred it to the things I found premade. If you're crafty and have the time I almost always would go the handmade route.

Absolutely! I think that's a smart move and so worth the money! You could also check Hobby Lobby, Amazon, and Michaels for necessary supplies. Hobby Lobby & Michaels consistently run 40% off sales, so be on the lookout for those coupons if you decide to buy anything from there. Post some updates when you make things! We'd love to see 💕

That is what I am finding is a lot of the premade things that I am finding are geared towards hetrosexual couples so for me I am thinking that making things on my own would be easier since we are both women. So that I can easily make things that say Mrs. and Mrs. without having to buy two sets of things. Time really isn't a problem for me but that is a good point that it isn't always cheaper.

Completely understandable. I run a small craft business anyways, so I think a cricut would help out there, so it isn't just a full on wedding expense. Thanks for your input!

I compared prices on things. A lot of our projects ended up either costing just as much or in a couple cases even more than the premade versions. But we went DIY anyway because we liked our ideas more. There were several projects that came in a lot cheaper but that is because I already had the materials from past crafty adventures. Having a cricut is really helpful especially with having to personalize the usual Mr&Mrs stuff, but I wouldn't recommend getting one unless you'll actually use it after the wedding. One of the websites I was finding in my research had a lot of awesome Mrs&Mrs stuff that was really reasonably priced. I'll see if I can find it again.

Daughter frequently found it cheaper & easier to buy stuff, as several of her early DIY projects ended up costing more and being significantly more complicated than she expected. She had great luck with Zazzle. You can customize virtually every product they offer and they have 50-60% off coupons pretty frequently. If you will potentially be placing multiple orders, sign-up for their Zazzle Black promotion and you get free standard delivery for a year. Good luck! Smiley heart

That would be awesome! I am struggling to find things that are Mrs.&Mrs. that would fit our theme (rustic navy and wine) and aren't pride themed, so that is why I was thinking of just biting the bullet and getting the complete set up with a Cricut.

I have a small business selling personalized items, so I felt comfortable making my own signs and a few things for our bridal party. Since you have a year to learn, that would be sufficient time to make quality items. I wouldn’t recommend it if you won’t use a Cricut after your wedding. The machine and good quality supplies are an investment.

We are pretty much diy everything our centerpieces, tables numbers, all signs, just about everything we are even making our own arch. My mom was a Girl Scout Troop leader and my fiancé is a wood worker so we got pretty much all the tools and skills. I found with everything I’ve made so far has been cheaper than the versions I’ve found on Pinterest and Etsy.

It boils down to personal preference. If you purchased the Cricut and supplies, would you get your money's worth beyond your wedding? You can also design signs/invites/etc on Photoshop or Canva and have it printed at a local Staples/Office Max. You have more creative freedom with clipart, fonts, etc.

You can buy them premade on Etsy and have someone else do the work, but you have to chat with them beforehand about creative liberties of changing fonts, colors, art. Not all appear to offer such leeway even though they are marketed as custom.
Due the research into both options and follow your gut.

Time and sanity are huge factors that not everyone takes into consideration. They look at the price of materials and don't consider everything that goes into it.

If you’re already a bit crafty and would use it for more than just wedding stuff, I would highly recommend getting the Cricut. Otherwise, I don’t think it would be worth the cost. I have a cricut maker and I use it all the time. I’ve made wall decals for our home, various birthday and holiday cards, and personalized gifts. So far for the wedding I have made our guest book and some signs and table numbers.

Also, some supplies don’t necessarily have to be Cricut brand. For vinyl I like to use Craftables, I think it’s a lot cheaper and you get a lot on a roll.

Definitely! That's the way to do it. Doesn't seem like it'd make a difference, but it sure will when it's all added up!

I own a Cricut, but I’m not using it for much as far as the wedding goes. Invitation supplies, the time to cut them, and the time to assemble them would all add up to more than the cost of purchasing.

Have you looked at Etsy? Most of the shop owners will customize wording, so you can easily change it to suit you and your future wife!
