Buying a suit for the groom

Melanie, on March 17, 2018 at 9:16 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Where should one go to buy a nice suit? We're not having a bridal party, so it's just FH and he wants to buy one rather than rent. Probably in navy and he wants a vest.

We live in a good sized city, so most chain stores are probably here if you have recommendations.

Also, how much should we spend to get one of good quality? I looked at one local shop and they were $600-$800, which is too much for how FH treats his clothing. I don't want him to look cheap though!

Thank you!

We got ours at Macy's. By waiting for a sale we got it for less than $200. That was great because it left money for the rest - shirt, shoes, tie, pocket square (trust me, all of that will add up). The groomsmen are wearing the same suits but without the vest so for each of them it was only $150. Is it wool or the best fabric? No, but it looks nice and fits well.

I would check jcpenny, Macy's or Dillards. We spent $150 for fh jacket there. With pants it would have been $200. Right now it's prom season so they have tons of suits, vests, and ties.

I would say $400+ is about right, you get what you pay for to some extent. Also consider I am assuming you spent more on your dress (could be wrong) and he will likely get a few wears out of this suit and I’m assuming you won’t wear your dress for the true money’s worth.
i definitely had to check myself when I started to question my fiancé’s $$$ desires. But he wasn’t even looking to spend half of what I spent on ring/tux so i shut up.

I think for some reason the wedding world kind of programs brides to try and spend the least on the groom and that’s not right or good for the relationship. The cheaper $100 rings (if that) a cheap rental or hunting for a deal when buying a suit. Meanwhile likely thousands of dollars on rings and dresses for us! If he likes the $600 suit tell he looks good, but it, and move on! If you have concerns put it in your list to dry clean after the wedding and hang it up for the next occasion.

If he is a "normal size" you should be able to shop at department stores like Macy's, Nordstroms, Lord & Taylor, etc. Or even Men's Warehouse. They're selection is great. My fiance is having his suit custom made from Men's Warehouse. I think its still a good price.

We also got ours at Macy's while they were having a sale so it ended up being about $300.

My fiancé and groomsmen decided to go through Indochino. If you’re in a big city they likely have a store where you can go in and look at fabrics and get measured. Every suit is custom, made to order. You could even do the whole thing online if you want. We haven’t ordered yet so I cant tell you for sure but they always have good sales, so a custom suit for $300-400 seems like a good deal to me!

Makeyourownjeans .com has custom suits for $190. If you want nicer material than regular wool, the price goes up. They have cheaper material too that would be less than $190.
My professor gets all his suits from there. He suggests measuring 3 times and if the measurement vary, use the in between measurement. The turn around time is 2-4 weeks but lately it’s been 2 weeks.

Nordstrom rack! Same great clothing as full line stores but alterations are trusted. No good in having a suit if it's not tailored appropriately. That's just as important!!

My H got his as Banana Republic. It’s a great suit, 100% wool, and they sometimes have pop up sales of full price items for 40% off.
