Butterfly Release?

Sarah , on July 19, 2010 at 5:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I know this might sound strange but we are thinking of having a butterfly release after our ceremony. I am wondering if anyone has done this or been to a wedding where its been done. I think it would be so pretty and symbolic of new life. Its pretty pricey and I know it could be complicated but I am looking for any reviews!? The company that has been reccommended to me is http://www.swallowtailfarms.com/

I hate to be a downer, but every time I've seen this done, half the butterflies died. I think it's kind of cruel to keep them cooped up in little boxes and then let them go in a big crowd--I think it must be really disorienting, for the ones that even survive it. Symbol of new life = pretty, but dead bugs = depressing, you know?

I would want to, but I wouldn't want Monarch butterflies, I would want the black & blue ones to match my wedding. That & my wedding is the last day of October...I don't think they would be too chipper.

A friend of mine did this and it came out wonderfully!

Trick was that she kept the butterflies in a nice, cool place. And when it was time for the ceremony, her BM's kept them under a chair in the audience.

One really thing is that later, during the reception, the butterflies were still flying around to all the flowers. Her reception was in an open tent.

I dont recall many of the dying. I could ask her, tho.

    the pic came out AWESOME!!!

I originally wanted to do that too. FH didn't really like the idea...and it wasn't allowed at my venue anyway. As long as you follow directions exactly, the butterflies will live---and many places guarantee it. When it is cool & dark they are naturally dormant. Also, normally you can't pick the type/color of butterflies because reputable companies ship butterflies which are indigenous to your area. Actually butterfly releases help repopulate the area and are good for butterflies because of it.

Pictures of butterfly releases look great. Smiley smile

Thank you all for your responses! I have also heard of them being absolutley beautiful but I have heard the other side of some being dead...and I would hate to plan for this and then have that happen. I feel like its risky...I guess I need to find the most reputable company and put someone in charge of them that day...where to keep them, right temperature, etc. I also need to see if my church will allow that...anybody know if this is allowed in a Catholic church (it would be outside, right after the ceremony?

p.s. thank you again for your responses...Im new to WW and am becoming addicted to the forums!

I think each individual church would have their own rules about that.

    Welcome to WW!! Smiley smile

I've been to weddings where it worked out well, though they did have to go through the boxes to check on them the night prior. I'm still thinking about doing this... There's actually a butterfly farm near me so it wouldn't be much of a shock to them since they would be released in the same general area and wouldn't need to be shipped a long distance (or at all, since I could pick them up).

My cousin got married in a Catholic Church and they did allow the butterfly release right outside when the bride and groom came outSmiley smile Sadly though, there were dead butterflies everywhere and that is because they didn't fly out right away, they fell to the floor or were all over everyone's clothes and they got crushed. It was very sad and creepySmiley sad My cousin said later that you are suppose to take the butterflies out of the fridge or whatever and leave a certain amount of time for them to "wake up" and I guess that is where they went wrong. Maybe if you do it right it could be absolutely beautiful!
