Busty bride with a dilemma here...

Erica, on January 25, 2018 at 2:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
So I have a very large chest, and when I say large I mean like boom. Lol I’m a US G/F cup and am also plus size. The dilemma I’ve run into is that I’ve absolutely fell in love with a dress (multiple dresses honestly) and the number one contender is completely backless. Going braless is absolutely not an option for me and I’m not sure sewn in cups would be enough to support my girls. I’ve never worn formal attire without a bra so I have no experienc with sewn in cups and am not sure how supportive they really are. I don’t think they make adhesive bras big/supportive enough for me either.

Does anyone have experience with this, or any advice??

Have you tried these dresses on or just seen them online? I can tell you from experience that most times what you think you will love looks and feels different than you expected, and vice versa. I'm a busty girl myself and know that I need a bra with support. I don't even like strapless bras. But the best advice is to try these styles on to see if you really like them and will be comfortable all day in them.

No advice, but I am 40N and people keep telling me the seamstress can sew in cups and it will be great. I have never even met a useful strapless bra. I have heard others around here say ithe sew ins worked great for them. I am skeptical. But a lot can be done with alterations and customizing.

Unfortunately the only boutique they have is out in LA so I’d have to order the dress online. I know it’s a risk, but I’m so in love with it... IDK what I’m going to do. Smiley sad I figure my best option is to try on dresses with similar silhouettes if I decide I’m going to take the risk.

Same. That’s what I’ve been hearing but I’m worried... hopefully they can do sew ins with like underwire or something for extra support.

You’re definitely going to want to try similar dresses on before deciding. I had a vision in my head for the longest time and trying dresses on made my vision completely change. None of the dresses I loved in pictures were right for me.

38DDD here. My seamstress said they didn’t have cups that would be big enough (not sure if just there or in general. I had a long line bra with a corset dress. Definitely try on similar before you purchase and also maybe talk to a seamstress that you are going to use for alteration for their thought. Personally I would be hesitant to go backless.

I would not order a dress like that without trying it on. I suggest going to local boutiques and trying on similar styles to see how comfortable you are. I am not very busy but I would still be nervous with how low cut the front is and having no support in the back that my girls would slip out.

34H here. Seamstress said no way could they sew in cups with enough support for me. If your dress has any sort of boning it might be OK but otherwise you're going to have trouble finding a longline or backless bra for that dress.

Have you tried any dresses on similar to the one you're considering? Maybe go to a bridal salon and find a similar style and make sure you're comfortable in it before ordering something online.

It's a lovely dress... what is your band size? As someone that had a very large chest and worked with bras for years, the actual volume of cups/chests vary a lot based on band size. i.e. 32G = 34F = 36DDD/E = 38DD and are all similar in actual volume. If you are like a 30/32G/H this is a much different scenario than if you are a 38/40/G/H. You *might* be able to figure something out with tape or a custom made corset/boning situation with a talented seamstress, but even if that is possible, it is going to be expensive. Still, I wouldn't buy a dress I couldn't try on regardless of the bra situation. If you seriously cannot get over this dress, either try on similar and hope for the best (and be willing to have wasted the money if it is nonrefundable) or buy yourself a ticket to LA.

I would definitely try on similar dresses and dresses in different silhouettes. I've tried on some dresses, and am going to another shop this next week, but I've actually become fixated on a Cocomelody dress myself! I was chatting with a customer service person last night about options. If you get the dress customized from them, you can have the things you like about it, but change the back and/or the straps.

I wear a triple D and I thought I was going to have the same problem. And I didn't think that I would be able to wear a backless dress and the dress shop told me that they don't recommend selling anything larger than a C cup into a dress. I was able to get a dress with good enough support but I don't need to wear Abra is backless and it has spaghetti straps and it's amazing how supportive it is

Oooh which dress caught your eye? They have so many pretty ones I was a little overwhelmed, but I fell in love with the one I chose. Its just so perfect for my theme and I can’t get over it. I actually contacted customer service and was told that I could customize the dress to have a closed back! I still plan to try on dresses with similar silhouettes to see how it looks on me, and I’m still a little scared about ordering a dress online... but I’m almost certain that I’m going to order this dress and have the back closed, which will solve my bra dilemma. I’m just so in love with the dress that I feel like I need to take the chance you know?

Right now I’m a 44G, but I’m hoping to lose quite a bit of weight for my wedding. I’m getting married in May 2019, and plan on dress shopping towards the end of the year. I am weary about buying the dress online but I’m so in love with it I feel like if I don’t at least take the chance I’ll never get over it. I do have a cousin who lives out in California, so I might be able to go to the boutique in LA, but I’ll have to see about my finances come September. If I can’t, I plan to try on dresses with a similar silhouettes. I find that a-line dresses and empire waists tend to look really good on me where I am so busty, so I’m hopeful.

This is the Cocomelody dress I really liked since I'm looking for light dresses for a summer wedding. You can't see in this picture, but the back is a little low with those two fairly thick straps and has a light train. But I really like the beading detail on the bodice and shoulders. It's LD3734 I haven't seen anything else like it in my browsing so far and I don't know what the next bridal shop will have to offer. I might end up loving something completely different. In chatting with the customer service, they said it would be no problem to raise the back and sides if I wanted, and I've tried on some dresses with a similar shape. I was tempted to hop in the car and drive down to LA, which is four hours away from where I live, but they don't have any samples in this dress anywhere near my size - on the website, you can see what dresses they have in the LA store.

That was actually one of the dresses I had added to my wishlist so I know exactly what the back looks like. It really is a beautiful dress. One of the things I did notice in reading reviews is that the LA store didn’t have a whole lot of sample dresses for plus size brides which sucks, though I can’t say I’m surprised. That’s pretty typical. But I mean the fact that you can customize pretty much any dress to be in your size is pretty amazing. I still have a little while before I actually start seriously shopping for a dress, but when I do I’m almost certain it’s going to be the coco melody one.

Look for a dress that at least has a back up to where a bra strap goes, or in my opinion you're most likely setting yourself up for disappointment. I was a 34G when I got married, and the majority of my breast tissue is on the top of my breasts, so they tend to droop. I got a dress with a built in corset that came to my waist but had a lot of boning in friont, a thick top, and a lace back from waist up, but after it was fitted I was sti'll not happy with the way my chest looked.

No, they don't have cups bug enough for you, but mine took a large cup, folded it over, and sewed it below in my dress below each brush. I'll post a pic here and also a pic of my dress. I would NEVER recommend a backless dress.

Back ending low with just lace was difficult. Don't get a backless dress!

Even if you have support in front. I was a nervous wreck until my seamstress came up with a solution. Don't rely on a seamstress to work magic.

I'm so happy to hear people share their experiences. I have had a couple bridal consultants insist that a seamstress can somehow find a way for a dress to hold up my 10+ pounds of breasts with a backless or illusion back dress when I haven't found a full strapless bra that can do that.
