Bustles

Heather, on June 27, 2023 at 5:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
I went went to my alteration appointment today. I know bustles are normal. But I have to have 7 of them. My dress is 3 layers. It's this normal? Will it look okay?

I’m assuming you mean that you need 7 points for the bustle? If so, yeah, that’s probably at the lower end of average for bustle points. I think mine had like 8 or 9, and it was a fit and flare with not that long of a train.

Maybe? I assume so. She just said I need 7 & put safety pins in, for where they go. What is the difference between points of bustle & needing 7 of them? My train isn't long either. The dress is flowy (& a line).

The dress material is heavy, so to hold the train up, you usually need to distribute the weight across a certain number of points to make sure it stays up and doesn’t rip. You can Google bustles and see different images and styles.

I actually feel the the dress is light weight. There are 3 layers but they are all super thin & light.
    Gotcha. I understand that.

I had 3 spots at my waist that my train was bustled to. My dress was completely plain. No lace or anything. Maybe it’s because you have so many layers? Or a lot of detail to work around? I only had to lift the train so it wasn’t too heavy. All I had was tulle underneath which wasn’t bustled at all

The skirt is chiffon. It probably is because there are so many layers. I do have some detail up top & also some moonstones and beads around the waist though.
    It has a chapel train.Bustles 1

It being chiffon might be a reason for some many spots too. That way it doesn’t risk a tear at all. Mine was a more solid fabric so I didn’t need to worry about a tear as much and yeah I’m sure having a few layers makes it more difficult Bustles 2

My dress had a plain, A-line chiffon skirt and I ended up having 5 bustle points. The material is so thin/slippery that using less bustle points would make the fabric slip down around the bustles.

Oh my goodness... I love your dress! Did your husband not step on it at all while dancing?
Is your dress 2 layers? And how did you find it all worked out? And CONGRATULATIONS!!!

    Thank you!!

Nope, had no problem with him or anyone stepping on the dress! It was 2 layers of fabric and worked out very well for the most part. One of the side bustles was finicky and would slip off its button a couple times in the night, but I'm not sure if that was seamstress error or bridesmaid error, lol.

Actually, mentioning the one that would pop off: when that one was unbustled, all the fabric it held up would drag on the floor. Just a testament of how slippery/flowy the fabric is and maybe why there's so many bustle points. I think a fabric with more structure may not drop as far if one bustle point came undone

    You're welcome.

Oh my. I hope they all stay on. For our wedding in 2008, I only had one. But it was a tighter fitting dress. But after 15 years and 2 children, I've gained a bit of weight😅 So I went with an a- line for our vow renewal.
I'm glad it all worked out very well for you. I have hope now 🤣 I was just worried about having so many.

This is too late for the OP but thought I'd chime in.

I was just reading an older thread where it was shared that bustles are so often promoted but not particularly needed. One bride even noted how she had a bustle and her dress got torn anyhow. Joanna said she just used a loop for the newlywed photographs and was just fine without a bustle. Don't be scared into thinking you have to get the bustle.
