Bustle Question??

Tabitha, on June 14, 2012 at 10:41 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

So yesterday I picked up my wedding dress after it got altered and a bustle added. I get there and the hem looks great they had to hem the dress ALOT like 9 inches!! The train of the dress is short but still a little long for my liking. I kinda wanted one with no train, Oh Well.

However, the dress when the bustle was done still dragged on the floor 4 inches. I told the alterations lady the I wanted my bustle all the way off the ground. She looked at me like I was totally wrong to want that. My wedding is going to be OUTSIDE for everything ceremony and reception. How was your bustle and did it drag on the ground.

Mine did, but that was unfortunately due to my MOH who didn't care to take time to learn to bustle it properly. It's not only a PITA, but you'll trip, and people will keep on stepping on it.

Did you have your wedding shoes on?

Yeah, I had my wedding shoes on. I am wearing flip flops becuase we are really causal and my FH is not alot taller tham I am. I am 5'3" and he is 5'7" so if I wear any heals it will make me taller than him in pictures and I think that will look funny

My bustle had my gown still dragging slightly. I was shown how to pin up my dress further for dancing (with safety pins!) but I didn't bother doing it.

    My dress bustled:

Mine is completely off the ground when its bustled. I thought that was standard. Isn't that the point of a bustle?

If you had your shoes on, 4 inches is a lot. My dress was touching the ground when properly bustled, but barely.

I haven't had my second fitting, but when she pinned it up at the first fitting, it was off the ground. Stand your ground and tell her how you want it. You don't want to be tripping or people stepping on it.

I am having a bustle made, but I don't know if I am going to actually bustle it. My dress has a carry loop on it, and I might carry it the whole night. It's the only night I get to wear a dress with a train! =)

Nope most bustles lay on the ground at least a little mainly to keep your shoes covered....my bustle wouldn't stay bustled because they used hook and eyes instead of buttons

Tabitha, it shouldn't drag -- the whole point of the bustle is to get it off the floor so you can walk around and move comfortably. I had a 3ft train and it was totally off the floor when bustled, so I agree with Antsy that you should go back and stand your ground on this one!

Christina W, does the carry loop actually come through the dress? A lot of people think the laundry loop is a carry loop and those aren't meant for that and can break (and either way, you're showing the inside of your dress all night if you use that). The only downside I've heard on the carry loops is that they get heavy and in the way sometimes. But I'm with you -- only time I'll wear a dress with a train!!

Another thing is when they look at you like you're crazy, they usually just want to get you out of the door. They think because you obviously don't have that much experience with wedding dresses, that you will just take their word for it and go.

I had that experience with my alterations. She also packed the gown as ready to go for 3 times when it wasn't even touched. So be careful about that too.

Hi All!! Just thought I would chime in and say the bustle should be off the floor or just slightly sweep it.

The loop on the inside of the dress is for hanging the train on a hanger. If a bride would like a wrist strap for the train it can be fashioned such that it stays inside the dress for the ceremony and then is pulled out through a small opening in a seam or a buttonhole. It must be well anchored and go through all layers.

Thanks, for all of your guys help. I thought that the bustle was supposed to be off the ground. I just took the ladies word for it. I will have to call them and see if they can get it off the ground. I am so clueless when it come to any kind a sewing. I thought that they would know what was right.

Oh so did I. And to this day not insisting on it is one of the two things I regret about my wedding. Some day I may let it go, but a gown that you paid to be altered and does not fit properly is not easy to let go.

My daughter was there with me, she is 12 going on 25, said to me, " Mom please don't turn into a bridezilla." I really don't want to be a bridzilla but I don't want to trip on my dress all night. My wedding is outside. Heck, I want to play horseshoes in the dirt with out have my wedding dress it totally gross. Really is that to much to ask?????
