Bustle help!

Stephanie, on September 5, 2020 at 11:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
I went in today for my final fitting before the wedding in two weeks... they had the bustle set to be the first photo.... which we thought looked absolutely awful. You could see the buttons going across even with my train out. They said, no one will notice them when you’re walking down the aisle. They’ll be looking at you and how sparkly your dress is. My mom said no... that’s all I can see is those buttons. They didn’t match the dress material either. So my mom suggested having the bustle up higher by my waist and flowing down. Like in the second picture. I think this looks much better. But I panicked because I didn’t know what other options I had! When my mom showed them her idea from when she got
Married, they were basically like... oh people don’t do bustles like that anymore And the train is heavy so we don’t want to fabric all at the waist...... did we make the right decision to change the bustle like the 2nd picture? Should we have done something different? Bustle help! 1

I think the second picture looks much better than the first picture. Also, at the end of the day you can make the final decision because it’s your dress. But yes definitely the second!!

I vote the 2nd picture too. Imho it balances the weight of your gown coming from the waist and it looks so much prettier and looks much more elegant.

2nd picture looks much smoother. I had a similar skirt and had the bustle tucked under the dress so then it was just a smooth skirt line as if there was no train for the reception. There are definitely options!

2nd pic is much better. I just did a fitting yesterday too and the seamstress did three loops for the bustle but mine was much higher and she made it to where we can fold it in so something to consider but I think the second pics looks very nice.

I agree with others that the second option looks much better than the first. However, you might also ask them so show you what it would look like if they did an under bustle. With an under bustle, the extra fabric is turned under the skirt and usually held up with ribbon ties and results in the skirt seeming to be one length all the way around the skirt that just grazes the floor when bustled. Especially with a full-skirted dress it's a very pretty look. Daughter's dress was lace and tulle layers over a satin lining, so they did an under bustle for the lining and a three-point over bustle for the lace/tulle.

I agree that the first one is awful and lazy work. I'm not a huge fan of the second one, either, tbh. You can Google different bustle styles. Your seamstress should make a bustle to compliment the pleats in your gown, and not just button the train up just to get it off the ground. The buttons shoupd be crystal clear so they're not noticible. You can also get a combination of underbustling (uses ribbons tied to loops underneath the gown to help distribute the weight) and buttons, too. Good luck!!!

I am not a big fan of either. I can see what they're saying about the dress being too heavy for the second one. What about a French bustle, is that an option? They put the fabric underneath instead of over:

I would definitely go with the 2nd pic. That first one doesn't look very good. For my dress I didn't have them add a bustle. I will be changing right after the ceremony pictures.

I agree that a French bustle seems like the best option for this dress. I feel like the fabric is very heavy and wouldn't want to see the buttons (#1) but also would worry about the weight of the entire train hanging from a single point (#2). Because the fabric is heavy and stiff, I feel like an under bustle would look smoother than either of the American style (over bustle) bustles.

I’m not sure that I can switch it to be an under bustle now. My wedding is in 2 weeks. But the second picture isn’t fluffed out like it’s supposed to be. So I’m crossing my fingers that it will look fine! 🤞
