Bustle Help!!

Lisa, on May 5, 2022 at 4:15 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
So my dress has a lot of beautiful lace on the train. I am not a fan of the traditional/American bustle, but I don't know how else it can be done!

Here's the style of bustle that the seamstress recommends (that's not me or my dress):Bustle Help!! 1

I really don't like the way this bustle looks, especially on my dress. For those that have lace on their trains, how did/will you bustle it? Does anyone have any ideas for how a lace train can be bustled differently?

Personally, I'm not a fan of American bustles. I'm thinking of having either a ballroom bustle or a train-flip bustle done (not sure if those are the same thing or not). The train essentially folds over itself and the dress looks like a floor-length dress.

I still don't understand all of the different bustles. I am interested to hear what you decide as my dress also has a lot of lace and a long train.

I'm also not a fan of American bustles. I looked up the ballroom bustle, and will have to ask my seamstress about it! She didn't like the idea of any kind of under bustle, so I'm not sure if the ballroom bustle will work out. Do you have a photo of what the train-flip bustle is?

I'm definitely not an expert on bustles either, lol. There are so many different ones! I've been trying to look up options, it seems like the American/traditional bustle is super common, which is a bummer because I *really* want to avoid it if I can. I will let you know what I end up doing for a bustle!

The american bustle is common because its easy to do and cheap. Its a single tack. Dont be afraid to really do your research and ask for the bustle look you want. Just because something is easier or done more frequently doesn't mean it has to be right for you.

I am not a huge fan of the American bustle either - but maybe that's because I can never get them to look as good as the seamstress does! I'd love to see how your ideas turn out - I ended up going for a sweep train so it is pretty much ground length.

The train-flip bustle and ballroom bustle might be the same thing. I only found out about these a week ago, so I'm definitely not an expert lol. I think the idea with them is that the train just folds up under the dress and gets pinned to the underside. I think the color and material of the dress in this picture makes it easiest to understand:

I did do a little digging, and some people have commented that the one issue with this bustle is that you may get a dirt line where the dress gets folded, whereas with other bustles it would normally be the bottom of the dress that would get dirty from touching the ground. Personally, I don't really care since I'm not planning to wear my dress again, but it could be an issue if you're looking to resell your dress or display it.

I agree, the American bustle seems easier to setup than others, but I'm just not a fan of it. I've been researching other bustle types, but haven't yet found one that I like. I will keep looking. Thank you for your reply!

Awesome that you have a sweep train! I think that would be the ideal length. My train is a bit longer than that - not too long, but long enough to where I definitely need a bustle to keep it out of the way. The American bustle just seems to be too awkwardly placed and not very pretty on my dress. I'll post about what I end up going with once I figure it out!

This is good to know, thank you for sharing the photos!! I think this is definitely more towards what I'm looking for. I don't think that the dirt line would be much of a concern for me, I'm planning on having my dress cleaned and preserved after the wedding, so hopefully that would take care of it. I will discuss this option with my seamstress. Thank you for your help!!
