Bustle for tulle a-line dress??

Alexandra, on January 7, 2019 at 11:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 6
I just got off the phone with the seamstress my bridal salon recommends and am trying to figure this whole bustling thing out.

The skirt of my dress is soft netting and tulle with a poly lining. When I purchased the dress, I the consultant showed me how a French bustle would look and I loved it. The seamstress (who is obviously more knowledgeable about this than the consultant) is now telling me that I would need to have an over bustle due to the fabric.

So now my question is if this is correct?? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen tulle dresses under bustled, but now I’m second guessing myself. Of course I’ll do whatever needs to be done, but I want to know all of my options.

Has anyone had a tulle dress and bustled it? What style of bustle did you go with? How many points? Could you share a picture?

Non-tulle brides - I’d love to hear about your bustles and see pictures too!

I had a 5 point over bustle , but unfortunately few real good pictures because no one besides me learned the proper technique so on the day of it wasn’t properly smoothed out and looked ....not great. But here is a pic in a bag at the tailor after the seamstress demonstrated it . You can see the 5 points up at the top /waistline

i would think there may be *some* way to go about doing an underbustle but I can see concerns , especially a risk of tearing if fastening tulle to tulle— the button points on my dress were up on the heartier bodice area, so they could bear the weight with no issue. It would be worthwhile to ask your seamstress about their specific concerns with the under to see how solveable they may be

Sorry this is a bad pic but my dress is tulle. Here is the train and the seven point bustle with clear buttons.

Daughter's dress is an A-line ballgown with layers of tulle & lace over a satin polyester lining. They did an 3-point over bustle for the tulle and a 3 button under bustle for the lining. It looks really nice. The over bustle attaches at the waist, as daughter has a huge issue with the lower over bustles that look, as she describes them, "like the bride is pooping tulle...." During your alterations appointment, the seamstress should be able to show you how various options will look. Good luck!

Hey Alexandra!! I definitely get what you're saying! It's so important to know what all of your options are before making a decision. I would definitely ask the seamstress if it's possible to do an under bustle or what other styles would work with your dress fabric. There are some great photos and bustle experiences with tulle dresses in a previous discussion that may be helpful - Bustle on a Tulle Ballgown?

Hi there, when the dress was down, how obvious was it that you had loops on the netting? What did they do to make sure this was as minor as possible?

Not obvious! I was concerned when I first saw them while the seamstress was demonstrating, but that was just because they were “out” for the demo. The loops were very small and made of ivory string that was a decent color match for my dress. The most important part though, is that they were pulled taut from the *inside* of the dress for wearing (so, no loop hanging off on the outside at all, they were pulled in so the “loop” was just the thread pulled tight against the dress so it just looked like a small stitch). Honestly, my girls really had to hunt for the “loops” when it came time to bustle. They’re not at all visible in any pictures.
