Burn hole on dress

Jessica, on June 30, 2022 at 8:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hello Fellow Brides! I have a question. I had my dress in its bag and in my fiancés car to take to my parents house for safe keeping until my alterations appointment come up (July 13th). When we went to transfer my dress to my car last weekend (was going to my parents for belated Father's Day event) my fiancé noticed a burn hole on the bag and asked me about it. (We think when a family member who smokes was driving his car, ashes flew in the back and landed on the bag) As I went to unzip the bag to examine the dress, the hole burned through to the dress!! 😩. It's a small burn hole but I'm worried when my alterations appointment comes up they will tell me they can't fix it. Anyone out here have a similar situation? Help!! 😣💔

Oh-no! How big is the hole and where is it? I think it depends on the location of the burn and the size. It’s possible the seamstress might be able to fix it for an additional price.

I don't have a photo of it this minute, my best guess that It's the size of maybe a dime (maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️) and on the top part of my dress.

Oh ok, that should be an easy fix. I thought it was maybe a quarter size.

No, I don't think it's that big. I'm more worried that the alterations lady will tell me it's not fixable bc of the material of the top part. Here's a photo of me in it back in April. Burn hole on dress 1

Idk some seamstress are able to work their magic. Is there a way you could call beforehand and ask if they’d ever come across a similar issue? Hopefully they’ll be able to fix it for you.

Oh no! I am so sorry!! I honestly would be mad at the family member and make them pay for it :/

I am no seamstress but a possible solution may be for them to cover the hole with extra beading. They can sometimes work some serious magic! Good luck! Keep us posted!

Ouch! That’s irresponsible of the family member to smoke by your dress. Perhaps a lace appliqué can be sewn on top of the hole?
I’d be giving that person the bill like Ashley said.

My friend's in-laws transported her wedding dress to the venue, and happened to hang the wedding dress up in their hotel room over a radiator after the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. The entire bottom of her dress got burned. Fortunately, this was realized right away and the bridal boutique she got her dress from drove 1.5 hours the morning of her wedding with a seamstress who repaired everything.

A little burn hole in your dress should be salvageable, especially if it happens to be near the bottom of the dress or a part of the dress that is full (might be harder to fix if it was right on the bodice for example). I'd ask your alterations person what they can do. Good luck!

I would be LIVID if someone even smoked around my dress. They should def foot the bill but likely easier said than done. I think if you’re worried about the material, that may not be too crazy a fix. It may be as simple as a small patch fix that won’t even be noticeable.

Thanks everyone!! I'm gonna call David's Bridal the week of my appointment and ask about it! Some of you mentioned giving the bill to the smoker...even if I wanted to (which trust me I wanna be so petty with them right now 🙄...the long story I can tell you about the fights I have with my FH about his family!!) I know it will never be paid by them 😠. I'll just have to suck it up and move on with it. I'll keep you updated around my appointment!!

It may not have been a cigarette burn. If the sun is strong enough and there is a mirror near by, the sun will reflect off the mirror and burn anything in its path. This happened to a fabric chair in my house once. I no longer leave mirrors around the windows!
