Bump in the road

Dezandkamsmom, on June 26, 2019 at 3:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
My sweet friend who was making the cake of my dreams as a gift for my wedding broke her foot in 2 places Monday. I feel horrible for her. She is upset because she was making the cake and transporting it to me, 6 hrs away. I do not want her to feel that way. She said she would still be able to make the cake because she didn't want to put me in a situation. Instead of the detailed cake we had originally picked, I felt maybe a naked cake would be easier. I have to assemble the cake once it arrives, via her son. He is friends with my older son and was planning on coming anyway. I am kind of nervous about this and how it will turn out. I guess I am more nervous about placing the tiers on top of one another. I will decorate it very simply. I don't want my friend to worry or stress either. Also my husbands suit is next door at a store attached to my work place. I checked last week to see if the alterations were done and they were not. Now, I get to work Monday and there is a sign saying they will be closed this entire week. Soooo, I have to wait until Monday morning to see if the alterations are done or not, then get the suit to the cleaners to be pressed. It's a linen suit so I just need it lightly pressed because there were already wrinkles in it. Other than these 2 obstacles...my wedding is in 9 days. Surely I can stack the tiers on the cake and secure with dowels. Anyone who makes cakes...do you place the tiers on the layer with the cardboard?? I am going to watch some YouTube videos but I have no clue. I know in the end everything will be ok. Al's suit hopefully will be tailored and ready to go Monday. There will be no time to rent now so that will not be an option. My husband in my Rock and keeps me so grounded. He doesn't stress about a thing.

I'm not sure about the cake, but I'm confident that you can get it done! Don't stress, you're almost there!

Thank you. I actually would love to decorate A cake, just not my wedding cake. Lol. We can't help these kinds of things. I really don't want to inconvenience her but she insist on making the cake. I don't think it will be too difficult (or at least I hope not) putting the tiers together. If I make a boo boo, I will put a flower there or some ribbon. Lol

Larger plastic straws may be better than wood dowels depending on how many layers! I'm not a professional but I have made a two-tiered cake before and that's what I used and it worked perfectly!

Thank you. I thought it would be easier on her. I hope! It looks likes there are several layers. I didn't realize that. I like the naked cakes.

I would think you would still only have to put together the main 3 layers.

Naked cakes are usually harder to make. It may be easier to do a buttercream frosting in a way that looks slabbed on. Then spray it with Wilton Color Mist Food Spray. I love the pearl color on white frosting.

Instead of trying to stack the layers on top of each other, it may be easier to invest in a cake stand in tiers of different heights. They sell them on Amazon. It can't be easy to stack cakes that have already been frosted. Might be easier to stack a naked cake though.

Have your friend put large bubble tea/smoothie straws in each tier equal to the diameter of the tier above it. She should also have a cake board equal to or slightly smaller than the size of each tier under it. Run a thin knife or spatula around the very bottom of the cake to separate it from the large board it traveled on. You may not have to do that with a naked cake. Use offset or sturdy metal spatulas (longer ones are best) to lift the cake off the larger board (not the smaller one, it needs to stay under the tier for support). Get your hands (with food safe gloves) under the cake and place it. Have someone help you to make sure it is centered as best as possible.

I've made and stacked dozens of cakes. I still get nervous with each one, but it'll turn out fine. Don't move too slow as to mess up the buttercream, but not too fast that you drop it or it's way off center. Naked cakes are way easier to stack than fully coated ones.

Each tier should have 3-4 layers. As long as she's leveled, filled and coated those properly, you don't have anything to worry about. They should stick together just fine as you're assembling the cake.
