Buffet Vs Served food

Sharyl, on December 22, 2020 at 12:48 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
I have buffet set but I’m debating if I should change it to having the food being served individually instead because of covid. Has anyone had a COVID wedding with buffet food? If so, what was it like? At my venue, they said they will have servers serving the food to our guests at the buffet area but I’m still unsure about it. What are your thoughts?

If your venue is offering servers for the buffet, that might actually be more helpful. They can space out guests, and only one person will be touching the serving utensils.

Given that vaccines are rolling out, I think this sounds like good protocol.

I have been to 3 where they had extra servers at the buffet table, 2 with plexiglass shields over the servers masks where masked guests came up . One had a buffet set up , and menu cards they all filled out , naming everything on the buffet. Still more selection, choices of foods, even though a small gathering, which puts it above a 2 or 3 choice plated, in my book.
Server picked up our cards, went to the service station and came back with our food on a cart, a layer of cling wrap over everything on a tray. I cannot see how any plated dinner would be better. I have always liked limited menu with ordering choices at the event, far more than picking from 2-3 choices by entrees, knowing often 1 or more of us will not be able to have the entree and will be eating sides. And next best to limited menu is the wide choice of a buffet, where I ( allergies) and my child ( allergies and intolerances) have complete meals of our choice from a buffet with lots of variety. And with no guests serving themselves ridiculous amounts then throwing half away, while the last people have no choice, most food gone, servers were portion conscious, there was enough for seconds for any who wanted it. ... The 4th wedding was plated, and I could not have either entree, so I had macaroni and cheese, and vegetables. About $3 of food for their $75 a meal price.

We went to a wedding that had a buffet style reception dinner and it went very smoothly! The caterer had a server to place the food on your plate so that no one else had to touch the utensils!

Plated dinners are nice, but I always prefer buffets because there are more options for your guests. Especially those with food allergies and dietary restrictions!

If you can, I would change to a served, plated meal. They are always a nicer option over a buffet. However, having servers serve from the buffet is also fine. I just would not let people serve themselves from the buffet.

I didn’t go to a wedding with this, but we did do our food tasting with a buffet. Our venue had one server per dish, we held our own plates and they just scooped what we asked for onto our plate while we held it. Felt very safe doing it this way. I’ve always preferred buffets at weddings because it doesn’t limit you to one option that you may not like, so I will personally be sticking with a buffet style unless they tell us we absolutely cannot do it this way.

I went to a wedding in August that had a served buffet, which is also known as cafeteria style. They dismissed one table at a time to get the food and I think it worked well. We are considering doing this with our wedding as well, but it would cost more, so we are holding off on the decision for now.

Unfortunately, elegance comes with a price tag.
