Buffet or server? Can’t decide.

Keisha-Gay, on May 5, 2020 at 1:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 34
My fiancé is leaning towards Buffet and I am not. I really don’t like the Buffet idea especially speaking from personal experience...I want my guest to be seated and comfortable as best as possible.

We are doing buffet so people have a variety of choices and so we dont have to do a seating chart and its just less formal, we are having a very islandy beachy wedding

Buffet doesnt mean no servers tho, we would still have someone clearing plates, refreshing the food, etc

I am having a beachy wedding too but I wasn’t sure if buffet was a good idea. Thanks for that.

We had a buffet with servers and it was great because people loved the food and could freely get seconds and thirds but were still taken care of. I personally don’t like plated meals as much because I’m picky and I can’t choose what I want.

I also prefer buffet meals as a guest so I can choose what I want to eat.

On one of our first venue visits we were introduced to the idea of family style food and decided that’s what we wanted to do! The caterer puts out serving plates of each dish on each table and the guests help themselves. A bit less formal than a plated meal and a bit nicer than a buffet IMO, plus no waiting in line for food!

I went to a wedding with a buffet and i think it was fine HOWEVER it also was only like 80 people so that wasn't so bad. but i do agree that i think if the guest list is rather large then it might be better not to do buffet. but it IS a good option for if you want more variety.

We had buffet style and every wedding I have been to has been buffet style. We had servers that served the food at the buffet. Our wedding was very formal. None of our guests minded that it was buffet style. They got to pick their food that day rather than in advance like if you had plated meals. I personally prefer buffet style.

I personally am not the fan of buffets. They aren't common in my area, and I've only been to 1 wedding with a buffet. I hate having to stand in line to wait for food and then shuffle around with plates while in a nice dress and trying to dodge the rest of the guests on my way from the the buffet line to the table.

I was actually thinking about that too because I didn’t want the guest to stand in line

You need to compromise. The caterer may have the option of servers dishing up what guests choose as they walk through the buffet line, if you want to do that. Not everyone likes plated either because the portions are not always filling and they don't like the sides, etc so that can go to waste.

Sit down with your fiance and weigh out the pros and cons of each and contact the caterer to see what your options are before making a final decision.

This whole conversation is why we want to go family style. Its that middle ground compromise. You get to pick you food from the dishes on your table, and its less formal and feels more inclusive that buffet to me.

Having been to both, I've come to prefer buffet.

You usually get more food for your dollar, your guests have more choices, they can portion control as they like, and whole tables get served at once, instead of 2 by 2.

Buffets aren't server-free, either, they just can focus on drinks, clearing, and attending to guests who have dietary restrictions such as allergies or veganism.
