Budgeting/cutting Vendors

Jasmine, on October 21, 2021 at 11:42 PM Posted in Planning 4 15
Does anyone else get really overwhelmed when they think about how much everything costs? I have cut out so many things for our wedding, and I’m fighting internally on whether or not to cut out the videographer.
A lot of the things that are incorporated into our wedding have been second-hand finds at yard sales, antique stores etc. I made all of my bridesmaids “bouquets” myself, arranging decor, and even making some of the food that will be served. Basically anything I can do myself, I am doing it myself. However, when it comes to vendors I have cut out almost every single thing that isn’t absolutely necessary. (Ex. No florist, no caterer, etc.) Currently the only vendors I have for our wedding is the DJ, and a Photographer.
I’ve tossed around the idea of hiring a videographer since the beginning of our engagement, and it’s something that I really do not want to pass on. However, I don’t know if it’s in our budget. We already own a home together so obviously our bills need to be paid. Saving extra money for the wedding has been tough and I just feel like I’m drowning sometimes when I think about it for too long. Does anybody else feel like this or am I just going crazy?

I’m not doing a videographer and my friends are just going to bring their go pro cameras and record. Everyone I know who has gotten married has said the videos are their favorite part. It just didn’t fit the budget for me.

I would just ask a friend to do it. That's what we did and I know that most people probably watch their videos a lot but over the years we have looked at our photos more than our video. Smiley smile

I completely understand how you feel. It's tough trying to find a happy medium between doing everything you want to do but having to make it all fit your budget. I also played with the idea of a videographer, but it doesn't fit for us. I am going to ask my sister to record our vows because at the end of the day, I think that's truly the only moment I would like captured on video to look back on. I agree with Fiona, I think you will end up looking back on pictures more than you will re-watch a 10 minute video that will cost you thousands of dollars.

Keep your head up though! At the end of the day, it's YOUR wedding. Pick the things that are the most important to you and save on the rest!

I understand your budget restraints, however, I would do everything possible to hire a videographer! It was by far the best investment we made into our wedding! At the end of the day, the only thing you have from your wedding is your memories, photos, and videos. Photos are great, but videos were you can see your whole day come to life is so special!

You and your fiancé would always pick up a second job to help pay for items. Another way to save money is to cut your guest list.

I didn't hire a videographer, and after 2 years of marriage, I don't regret it. I knew it was honestly not something we would ever watch. My cousin actually recorded our ceremony and vows on his iPhone and sent it to us, and we haven't even watched that. It was not worth the $3000 price tag everyone was charging.

I keep going back and forth on this, Our original budget was 15k, we are now at 30k and it's overwhelming because I keep telling my fiance it's one day this is too much and then my fiance reminds me that it's our day, he is the one who is paying for the wedding,

Yes to this! The big thing I want to do is the ceremony itself. Being able to relive that moment is to me the biggest thing.

FH and I both work two jobs, and we’re actively looking at cutting our guest list to keep the things we want.
Cutting your budget for the vendors themselves is dangerous, because budget vendors usually (not always) provide budget results.
If capturing your ceremony is the main thing you’re seeking, you could ask your photographer if they have anyone they’ve worked with before that would do ceremony only, minimal edits, for someone on a tight budget.

Brutally honest, I have had several people send me their wedding videos to watch....I don't watch them. I was there. I saw it. Lived it. I'm not doing a videographer. DJ and Photographer are my only vendors. Getting married at a restaurant.

****% agree with Gina and we're doing this too, no videographer, we're having a restaurant venue with a ceremony space , and . DJ and Photographer are our only vendors.

I wanna be brutally honest, too:

the wedding industry is ... an industry. They are here to make money! Sure: all vendors really do care about making your wedding perfect and bringing your vision to life but they never stop keeping $$ in mind. They make you think that you need to carry flowersboutonnière/ corsage , fancy, decorated save the dates & invites,, an aisle runner, candles on tables, a second dress for your reception, late-night snacks, favors, gift for parents, a make up artist etc... the list is (almost) endless 😐.

Let's be clear: I'm not targetting brides and grooms, I'm targetting the wedding business.
All visions a couple can imagine are legit. If you want to spend $1 million, if the white house or a football stadium is your venue, if you want to invite 3,000 guests, if Taylor Swift is your maid of honor, if you want to sit on a throne at the reception with a crown over your head : 1) I couldn't care less... 2) It's none of my business... 3) I won't judge you because, again, you have every right to plan your wedding your way.
However I'm judging the wedding industry for shamelessly pushing people.

Hi everyone! I’m a 2022 Austin Bride and have been about to save $7,000 on my wedding. Here are a few of my tips:

    1. Negotiating with vendors (i.e. offering to pay in full upfront in exchange for 5% off)
    2. Researching most cost effective flowers and swapping out for more expensive/out of season flowers
    3. Utilizing faux cake tiers with icing and buying sheet cake instead

Not sure if it would be beneficial but I’m happy to help others do the same - just DM me!
