Budget Help!

Sara, on January 17, 2020 at 1:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 4
I know there are quite a few discussions about budgeting, but I’m going to be that person who makes yet another one. I’m super excited for my wedding, but budgeting is one of my biggest fears. My fiancé works full-time and he’s trying to save what he can, but I’m in my last semester of law school right now and I legitimately don’t have the time work since school is like a full-time job for me.
That being said, we’re not planning to have the wedding until November of 2021, which will hopefully give me enough time after I take the bar exam in July to get a decent job and start saving along with with my fiancé. However, I also know that a lot of venues and vendors require deposits months before the wedding. So I’m wondering if anyone has any advice for realistic budgeting and saving? Also, would it be beneficial for us to get a joint bank account to use for our wedding savings? What are simple ways to cut back on expenses while we save?

We aren’t going to get any help from our parents or relatives, so it’s just us trying to save up right now.

I got a small side job that I used to save for the wedding exclusively. I think it's also in how you plan your wedding - a smaller or simpler wedding is ideally cheaper. So cutting back on unnecessary wedding things would be a big help as well.

While vendors do require deposits, if you’re taking the bar exam this July that’s still over a year from your wedding. I’d maybe put wedding planning on the back burner (though still save) until after school, then spend that year planning your wedding.

You should look at your day to day budget and see where you can cut back first. Do you use all of your subscriptions? Gym memberships? Do you need the sports package or cable in general? Then decide how much you can realistically save In a month, and multiply it by the number of months until your wedding. There is your wedding budget. That may mean waiting a few months to accumulate some savings before you can put down deposits. Having a joint account has worked great for us, although we shared accounts before our engagement. Plenty of people plan weddings without joint accounts, so that’s something you should seriously discuss with your FH.

Beware of planning your wedding based on future earning potential. My fiance and I got engaged while in school and we waited to start planning the wedding until after we graduated. It took him 4 months to find a job, and I'm still looking 8 months out.

Luckily we've been able to shrink our costs, and that's something you might want to look into to. We negotiated different hours with the venue to get a lower rate than we were originally quoted. Our catering is going to be scaled back a bit. I bought a used wedding dress to save money. Since work and wedding are the two variables, either work has to increase to meet the wedding, or the wedding has to decrease to meet the work.
