Brunch Reception...dj or no Dj?

Amanda, on January 29, 2018 at 2:52 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
Hello,

I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not to hire a DJ for my brunch reception.

The alternative is to make our own playlist and ask a family member to control it and make announcements.

I don't want to ask anyone to help too much, but since its a more intimate affair, I thought it would be ok.

I'd hate to waste money on a DJ when people probably won't be inclined to dance anyway. We aren't having a traditional, long reception.

Thoughts?

I'm always pro-DJ. Regardless if it's a brunch wedding or not they can tell the mood/feel of the day and play appropriate music at appropriate times. They also act as an MC and can announce when you cut your cake, announce you into the reception after your pictures, and they keep the day running smoothly.

If your brunch wedding is shorter on time, I'm sure a lot of DJ's would cut you some slack on pricing.

Do you want to have dancing? If so, then you should hire a DJ. If you want a shorter, more laidback reception without dancing than you can just hook an iPod up for background music. It depends on the type of atmosphere you are trying to foster.

Personally, I would skip the dancing and just do background music for brunch but, that is up to you.

I am having a brunch reception and an awesome dj was on the top of our list. Where I live, we have lots of brunches/day parties and that is the vibe that we want to have at our reception. It really depends on the vibe that you want. If you want background music, you probably don't need a dj but if you want a party environment then you will need a good one. People dance all times of day and night if they have the right music to get them movin.

Thanks everyone. I want people to feel welcome to dance a little. But, the reception is in a banquet room at a restaurant so there isn't a full dance floor...just a little area. I'm not even sure if there would be a lot of room for a DJ.

So, there's really no way for me to tell if people will dance. Its a 2.5 hour reception.

We had a musician instead. It all flowed just fine, there were some songs that got people up dancing, but otherwise it was just a relaxed time to eat and visit with great background music.

This sounds perfect! Exactly what I'm hoping for. What kind of musician did you have? What kind of music?

We’re donning brunch as well and hired a DJ. At first we were going to make a playlist and have a friend run it for us but we want our friends to enjoy the day too and really wanted someone who could kind of guide the reception and such. You may be able to get lower rates because there’s a huge difference in a Saturday night reception and a Sunday morning, timeline wise. Never hurts to ask!
