Brother/sister dance when bride doesn't have a father figure for a father-daughter dance?

Lisa, on May 15, 2019 at 12:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Our wedding is going to be reasonably traditional and I'm fairly sure FMIL would like to have a mother-son dance, though we could just cut both if that would be better.

I was raised by my single mother, who recently passed away, as did my maternal grandfather (the closest thing to a father figure I had growing up). My older brother is going to walk me down the aisle and I am really happy about that.

Would it make sense for us to do a brother/sister dance if FH and FMIL have a mother-son dance? I was even thinking we could make it kinda fun (we have somewhat similar electronic dance music tastes -- wouldn't choose a slow ballad or anything!)

Is that something y'alls would do at your wedding or have seen at other weddings?

It sounds so fun!!! I think it will be right for him to dance with you since he's already walking you down the aisle.

I love that idea! If he is walking you down the isle, I think having a brother/sister dance would be perfect.

I think if your both comfortable with it that’s a great thing to do! Personally I would feel super awkward dancing with my brother even though we’re pretty close lol

Sounds like a nice idea. My cousin ended up dancing with my brother and my dad because she doesn’t have a father.

I’m sorry for the loss of your mom 🙁

I think your idea is great! Sounds like your brother is your closest family member & he’s already waking you down the aisle. I think it will be very sweet. Traditions don’t have to be followed blindly in order to be meaningful.

My mom is dancing with me since my dad has passed. If she weren't here I would dance with my brother. He's walking me down the aisle.

I'd do this! My FH mom passed away in Feb after being sick for a very long time and my bio dad passed away when I was 8. I have a stepdad and we are close but I probably won't do a father/daughter dance with him. I think we are going to do a grandparent dance where I dance with my grandpa and he dances with his grandma. I think you can do whatever you want and I definitely don't think anyone will think it's weird or doesn't match the parent dances if you dance with your brother. There are also PLENTY of songs that work well for siblings....first one comes to mind is Days Like This from Van Morrison.

Thank you for everyone who responded! We decided we will do the dance. Now the fun part is picking a song. And trying to figure out how to dance, lol. Thanks for the feedback everyone, helps to know I'm not too weird Smiley smile
