Brother Sister dance....

Harleybeachbride, on April 17, 2017 at 4:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Throughout the whole planning process, I have been most conflicted & emotional about the father daughter dance as my dad has passed. My 1st thought was to ask my FFIL but my mom shared that she'd love it if I danced w my brother (my dads only son and my only sibling) but I couldn't think of a song that would be fitting and wasn't sure if it would feel awk dancing w my bro!? lol. Then, I saw a video on WW a bride posted and it all became clear....Crosby Stills and Nash's "Teach Your Children" is a perfect song (my dad, my brother and I all love CSN) so I asked my Brother, he accepted and we'll be surprising my mom! He's even agreed to a private dance lesson next week so we will feel more confident and have a few steps that go w the tempo of the song. I think it's a perfect song to honor our dad. Did anyone do a brother/sister dance....was it awkward? What song did you dance to? I'm hoping this goes just like I'm playing out in my head!! :×)

    That sounds like it will be absolutely beautiful! My father passed away when I was little, but I don't have a brother, so I will be dancing with my grandfather, uncles, and brother-in-law. It's so great that you two will be taking a dance lesson also. I'm sure your mom will love that, and I hope you both enjoy yourselves as well!

    @Christine- thank you! Are you having 3 separate dances or choosing one of them? We are both so nervous, but the look on my mom's face when the DJ calls us up ( I am going to have him announce: this is for their mom Shirley, in honor of their dad Kenny) yesterday I told her I decided to forgo this part of the night all together so I think she will be very very surprised to see me and my brother get up there! I'm praying I'm not a balling MESS!! lol

    I don't think it will be awkward at all.

    I have seen were the bride starts dancing with a sibling and then paternal relatives take turns to dance with her.

    I've been thinking about doing a dance with my brother if we do end up dancing, I'd like the song to be American Honey by Lady Antebellum

    Awwww I'm so glad to hear your plan is coming together! I think the jaunty upbeat style of the song will keep you from crying. But even if you do cry, it will be such a beautiful, poignant moment. Can't wait to hear how it works out!!

    @Andrea....thank you! :+)

    @soontobeRTR-over all these months, I knew there was something deep down that kept me from asking my future father-in-law (even though he's awesome) and early Sat AM when FH left for work I played that video posted on WW and as soon as I heard the song, I started crying and KNEW in my heart that was the song I wanted to dance with my brother to and it all made sense!!! Good thing I finally saw the light cuz at least there's just enough time for one lesson....maybe two if needed but the dance instructor I spoke with played the song and already has a couple of great ideas for us. We just want a few simple steps so that we will feel more confident. :+)

    @A & L - I thought of asking my mom to come up part way through the song, but when I asked her to walk me down the aisle with my brother she said she would rather not as it would make her nervous plus she wants to see me walking as I come down the aisle (which I guess made sense) so I think I won't call call her up in case it makes her feel uncomfortable.

    @ MOB - I'm sorry! lol. The morning after seeing that video on WW I balled my eyes out while listening to it over and over (I even danced around the room as if with my dad) and just knew that it was right. Of all the millions of (by comparison) insignificant decisions I've struggled w thru out planning, this was by far the clearest one where I have ZERO doubts about! The song alone is so sweet and sentimental....add the fact it will be to honor my dad who i miss terribly everyday, I'll be lucky if I have any makeup left when the days over! lol

    @Susan.....we've met with the DJs twice and they know that I was still undecided about this part of the night, so now I'll be filling them in. :+)

    Love the idea! Although slightly different circumstances (my mother passed 8 years ago), when my brother got married, both my sister and I danced with him at his wedding. It was a really special moment for all of us.
